All this because of Brexit and Tory mismanagement.

It is a disgrace.

Urmstongran Thu 17-Nov-22 13:32:13

What are Labour (Rachel Reeves) saying about it?
I must read some on line news.
😊

Casdon Thu 17-Nov-22 13:38:45

I wonder if Ben Wallace will swallow the 2% of GDP on defence announcement?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 17-Nov-22 13:39:31

One of the reasons for this budget.

Brexit and the economy as described by BoE Governor

“The shocking impact of Brexit was laid bare at todays Treasury Committee

Higher food prices
Reduced wages
Reduced business investment
Falling trade
Business damaged by extra costs & paperwork
Higher inflation”

Pensioner households to get £300 support payment

Those on disability benefits to get £150

Certain means tested benefits to get £900

Additional cost of living payments next year of:

£900 to households on means-tested benefits
£300 to pensioner households
£150 for individuals on disability benefit.
(Source: Sky)

Means tested benefit/pensioner household - £1200
Means tested and disability benefits - £1,050
Pensioner, means tested and disability benefit - £1,350
(E & OE)

That looks very close to what these households got this year as far as I can see.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 17-Nov-22 13:46:53

So the question is - is the £300 on top of the winter fuel payment?

It was a good speech that carefully unravelled the Chancellor's. I think we will generally need to see more unravelling before we know.

My personal take away is that Brexit UK is the only OECD country with the sort of labour shock we are showing. It's time to stop fighting and work out what will solve it.

Growth will be impossible until we do.

A good Autumn Budget I thought.Much help for the less well off and pensioners, particularly those who really need it.
An increase in the hourly wage.
It was, as promised, a fair budget. I bet a lot of people will be pleased.
Glad to see Sizewell C will go ahead.

growstuff Thu 17-Nov-22 13:55:06

What was in the Budget to indicate that the UK will be a science superpower? Sorry, I missed something.

J52 Thu 17-Nov-22 13:55:19

The SP increase and minimum wage increase will bring some people into the basic tax rate, so not such a good increase for them.

Excuse me, haven’t we just been through a pandemic and aren’t there shortages due to the war in Ukraine? Isn’t there global recession? Did I sleep through it all? Is every single thing down to Brexit?

Oreo Thu 17-Nov-22 13:57:36

Rachel Reeves is good on dramatics, albeit with a nasal quality to her voice not unlike Keir Starmer which grates.
She didn’t have much to say about the specifics of the Budget though, more an expected general attack on ‘Tories’ .Well, what could she say? This budget is really going to help those on benefits and low paid workers and households getting universal credit, so she didn’t have much if anything to say about that.

Haha, yes for some it is.

It was this year although different amounts for different age households. To be honest, we won't know until the clever people have dissected the whole statement and is additional bits.

Urmstongran Thu 17-Nov-22 13:59:18

And at least we keep HS2.
🙁

Well done. As the Talking Heads on Politics Live said, that's what you are expected to feel.

Errrmmm ... well, no, not really. I thought I must have fallen asleep when he gave any details. Science in the UK has lost billions over the last few years from the unmentionable B ... I thought maybe we were going to turn the clocks back.

I missed the bit about the generous help for the less well off, too.

Anybody receiving an occupational pension in addition to the state pension will end up losing 20% of any increase.

It is what I thought after listening to the Budget thanks.
Couldn’t give a flying wotsit what talking heads on tv say.

No, but the labour shock is worse here than elsewhere. It is affecting our growth and our possibility of future growth. In fact, it is affecting us even standing still.

If we were doing equally badly or well compared to other OECD countries, your cries of foul would be reasonable. However, we are not. We are at the bottom. The one big difference is still Brexit. We are in a position to reverse those parts which are doing us harm.

Whether the vote was for good or ill, we still need to sort out what it has brought in its wake. To think it brought no problems with it would seem very ostrich-like.

We keep the triple lock and so will get a state pension rise of 10.1% next April.

A lot of facts and figures at this stage seem like smoke and mirrors (to me).

I’ll wait for a breakdown in the newspapers. That usually clarifies things.

that depends upon the newspaper you read. The non dom owners of the Daily Mail, Express and Telegraph are likely delighted.

You are reacting as this government wanted you to. It doesn't take long for the unravelling. I expect most of it will be out today and tomorrow. Then would be the best time to form an opinion.

CoolCoco Thu 17-Nov-22 14:25:06

Brexit has cost billions and has been a real hit to the economy, this is hushed up and barely gets a mention. No-one talks about the cost - its all glossed over and "global issues" are blamed, yes, we are affected by global issues, but we have imposed ridiculous economic sanctions own our own country which means our position is made worse than others. No other countries have done this.

They've also said in the past that we would be a high wage, high skilled economy; they would once and for all sort out social care; and they aspire to low taxes.

What's not to believe!

None of these were in train before Covid and Ukraine before someone brings them up as excuses.

CoolCoco Thu 17-Nov-22 14:26:32

Remember how the Express and Mail reacted to Kwarteng's budget? It was the best thing since sliced bread. Now ...?
