He coined the phrase tpw&s to encapsulate the attitude that some Unionists have/had to the concept of an independent Scotland, and actually says in the article that nobody ever says it...

This article by SNP supporter actually seems to prove the point. The so-called unionist mantra was probably coined by the nationalists as a snappy slogan to be thrown at the Scots who opposed separatism - 55% in the once in a lifetime referendum of 2014.

To return to the provocative title of this thread - the only people I've ever heard suggest that anyone thinks that "Scotland is so wee,,poor and stupid" are fanatical Scottish nationalists.

This is a discredited populist trope - accusing those who disagree of saying things they never said to whip up anger. It is on a par with blaming all Scotland's woes on "the English" or "Westminster" It weakens what might otherwise be seen as a reasonable point of view.

They sidn't use the bridge, Terribull, they floated them across the river in the dead of night!

That is one theory Kittylester, although some historians are of the opinion that the only reasons the Celts didn't use the Severn Bridge was not only their objection to paying the toll, but also having to confront some official in a peaked cap who may well have stopped them dragging the pilfered Welsh stones across the bridge.

Unsubstantiated conclusions were also a) The fearsome Welsh Dragon whose role it was to protect monoliths being removed from Wales in a sort of guard dog way were known to suffer from poor eyesight at night b) The English Celt had developed a prototype to the wet suit, ostensibly to cover any unsightly woad staining but quite by accident they also discovered these early wet suits kept the body heat in. Obviously that came in useful when floating the appropriated stones across the rather chilly Severn estuary. Incidentally the crafts used in such a venture were scaled down in size centuries later when The Romans came along and pushed the Celts west into Cornwall. Once there they settled mainly around Newquay having perfected both the wet suit and the surf board and well the rest is history really!

Maybe if the Kingdom of Northumbria was reinstated we could have the Kingdom of Strathclyde as well. It would stop all the arguing that went on for centuries after it was split between the two nations and probably make life easier in the North West if Scotland gets independence. Can we have all our artefacts back as well please that have gone south and facsimiles put in their place?

There was a very good series about the history of Sottish Art on tv recently. Lots of beautiful work especially late 19th and early 20th centuries. Much fraternising with the French (which the Scots have often done). Anyone else see it?

Well if the Scots get independence and we don't move the border to Hadrian's wall I think we need a campaign to recreate what was the Kingdom of Northumbria. It wouldn't be a kingdom of course but the area would be the same. Then I'd like all the stuff from the area which has been squirrelled away in London returned to us and displayed in northern museums.
