Meghan Markle Faced 'Disgusting and Very Real' Threats in the U.K., Former Counterterrorism Head Says

So possibly NOT figments of fevered imaginations.

In a new interview with Channel 4 News, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police said that there were genuine threats to the Duchess of Sussex's life while she lived in the U.K.

Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations amid his resignation as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Met Police in an interview released Tuesday. Basu, 54, is leaving the force after 30 years, during which he earned the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service and served as the senior-most officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police starting in March 2018 — two months before Meghan and Prince Harry's royal wedding.

"You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?" journalist Cathy Newman asked in a quick clip shared on Twitter.

"Well, disgusting and very real," Basu replied, calling extreme right-wing terrorism the "fast-growing threat" to the country.

^Old white people claim racism isn't really important.^

Maybe not all of the people on here but more than I thought I'd see.

Exactly. In any other context they seem nice. But issues around ethnicity (and trans) show a less pleasant side.

Growstuff, like you, I’ve an interesting in the industrial revolution. Manchester Mill workers supported the abolition of slavery. On the wall of the market hall in a small town in the north west, is a beautiful sculptured head, made in the image of an escaped slave, who came to England, where he talked to cotton workers about the terrible conditions of the slaves.

The cotton workers also supported the Indian workers, Ghandi visited Mill towns in the northwest.

For someone who wanted PRIVACY she certainly seems to be going the right way !!!! She needs to keep quiet and just go away ...we are NOT interested in what she thinks or has to say ....just let her have her desired 'PRIVACY'............

Oh if only.

Volver you have completely forgotten that she must have recorded the conversation because how would she remember what was said. Maybe being black means you can't remember things too! I am horrified at the way this conversation has turned out and hat's off to you for standing your ground against this racism.

Right? Talk about stereotypical. Old white people claim racism isn't really important.

icanhandthemback Fri 02-Dec-22 19:57:32

Growstuff smile. Well, I'm white and my memory is hopeless. Not only can I not remember what was said, I often don't even remember the conversation ever happening.

You could have fooled me!

We are on page 10 of yet another article about her - not to even mention the numerous media stories and editorials that pop up regularly.

You'd think the press would've cottoned on by now that no-one's interested in what she says or thinks, they're usually quite clever at working out what's in the public interest, or rather, what interests the public - after all they depend on the advertising revenue that high circulation numbers attract so if "we are NOT interested", I'm surprised they persist with their click-bait articles! grin

Sorry, just realised you were being ironic.

I'm not black and I could remember a conversation like that.

growstuff Fri 02-Dec-22 19:36:29

Iam64 Millworkers in Manchester and Lancashire were generally in favour of the abolition of slavery, even though it meant their own jobs were at risk through a rise in the price of raw materials. It's good to see that there was solidarity with oppressed people, rather than just looking after themselves.

PS. Sorry, that's a diversion, but social history of the Industrial Revolution is an interest.

The retired police officer had a book due out

He also claims the reason he didn’t get the top honchos job in the NCA was because of his ethnic origins.

Basu isn’t the first senior police officer to believe he could have been even more successful in his career had he been white. He won’t be the last either. I often feel I’m not black and white enough in my consideration of race, oppression, empire, slavery. I’ve been known to reflect on the average age of Mill workers death in Manchester at 19, wondering if my ancestors had it nearly as grim as those picking the cotton they spun. Then I remember, my lot had freedom of choice, not great freedom of choice but they could walk, go back to vanishing agricultural work. Slaves had no choices. Then I look at the current threads with racism as themes and despair

Fleur, is that you pepper?

Basu has spoken out against institutional racism. His forthright opinions almost certainly did affect his career. If he'd gone down the route people such as Badenoch and Braverman have followed and denied racism, he might have been more successful.

^i think we are in the presence of racism and real hatred^
( play ghoulish music) be afraid, be very afraid 🙀🫣

Oh but I am afraid in a way

A woman who doesn't fit the stereotype of looking "British" is patronised and badgered by a privileged old woman in a position of power.

A social media site aimed at older adults demonises the woman and spreads lies unproven allegations about her - she was wearing a wire, she planned it all, she was really after Camilla, Meghan made it happen.

She has something to hide, why didn't she behave the way she should have, surely she's the racist. Why was she wearing leopard print?

So a whole section of society are willing to believe a whole pack of lies because it fits their preconceptions and contributes to a fear of the "other".

If you're not afraid, you either don't understand the issue or you're part of the problem.

This information is completely useless unless we have some supporting statistics to give us context.

For example:
Did they as a couple get more or less threats than other members of the royal family?
Did Meghan get more or less threats that other women who married into the Royal family?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg.

At the moment we really don't know enough to comment.

Anniel Fri 02-Dec-22 18:02:59

Volver,

Well i saw it reported that the exchange WAS recorded. If it wasnt then how the hell could that dialogue have been memorised so exactly word perfectly?

volver Fri 02-Dec-22 17:52:36

If she was so upset i wondered why she had the foresight to record the conversation.

She didn't record the conversation though. 🙂

Anniel Fri 02-Dec-22 17:49:19

Volver. Glad i gave you such a laugh. I should have omitted “in” but you would still sneer. I note you iften do so. You will not admit that Mrs Fulani used this episode for her own ends. If she was so upset i wondered why she had the foresight to record the conversation.

I am English but wish i had a quid for every time someone meets me and asks what part of Australia i am from. I never take offence because people show a genuine interest in the accent because they have relatives over there. But i am white so maybe that means i am not from an ethnic minority. Anyway i do enjoy giving you room to sneer and make fun at my expense! If I was local African Caribbean you would not do so! Thats life!

Cossy Fri 02-Dec-22 17:43:12

Goodness !! Just re-read all the threads and responses ! Rather nursery like ! Just for the record I’m not a paid up member of the Tory Party and I’m retired !! Live and let live is more my mantra and can we not have a debate without resorting to playground insults ?

Cossy Fri 02-Dec-22 17:34:49

I cannot pass an opinion of whether I “like” her or not, I don’t know her, however I do know our media and parts of our public never felt she should marry OUR Prince Harry and he clearly loves her and if they’re happy together then good for them !! As for the whole privacy and working to pay for themselves, they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t ! There’s a huge difference between choosing to share private photos and facts and being stalked by the media. Would I choose to make my living selling my stories ? Possibly not, but that didn’t stop her father or half-sister selling their stories and it seems many of us vilified her. Finally I just don’t think she ever really “got” our Royal Family or fully understood how controlled her life would become.
