BBC News - Buckingham Palace aide resigns over remarks to black charity boss
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63810468

Well at least the Palace took this incident seriously and didn't fob off Ms Fulani's complaint.

Some antiquated comments on here blaming the lady for her hair, clothes, name, (aka skin colour);, not being deferential enough, posting on social media instead of “complaining to the palace” - would you know who to complain to “at the palace”? would they take any notice? Not if the attitudes are similar to this privileged old retainer. Would they badger a white lady about where her parents are “really” from? No, it’s obviously racist language and attitudes which do not belong in the 21st century.

I want people to get Ms Fulani's name right.

Why?
Very few get my name right on GN.

Oh come on all you saints😇
We all see that Lady Hussey spoke very wrongly to the guest but it’s not a hanging offence.
She will be very unhappy after being asked to resign, the right thing obviously if she speaks in this way, but what do you want, blood?

Aveline Wed 30-Nov-22 20:40:42

I think it's acceptable to ask where she is from, particularly at an event like this when people may have come from all over. Perhaps one might then ask how long her family had been over here "Oh how interesting" and leave it there. I gather that Ngossi Fulani has said she was sorry the lady had resigned because at her age she probably didn't realise how rude she was being.

now we see why some MNers dread the annual xmas visits to/from in-laws/elders who make offensive comments and are resistant to amendment.
i'd begun to think it was a bit of a stereotype, but having read some of the comments on here, i can see where they're coming from.

Don't worry all of you.

We oldies will all be dead soon and the world will be a lovely place 🙂

It would appear that Lady Hussey isn't the only person who thinks people should show deference due to age.

Not deference but some understanding perhaps.

oh dear god..

just when you think it can't get any worse... 🤣🤣🤣

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 20:28:40

You got it in one Elegran👏🏻

NanKate Wed 30-Nov-22 20:27:45

I bet MM is rubbing her hands with glee. More ammunition for her and Harry.

I think the whole sorry affair has been blown out of proportion. The perpetrator was wrong, but there are far worse things going on in the world today Ukraine, Iran, China to name but a few.

Elegran Wed 30-Nov-22 20:26:31

Elegran But she wasn't wearing "national dress".

There are other photographs of her online wearing clothes which do have an ethnic slant. Maybe Ms Hussey had seen those? And the braids?

She should have stopped digging when it became obvious that she was meeting resistance to giving her the answers she was looking for, but it was understandable that she started the line of the conversation with that. She may have had more experience in her past years as a royal aide with people visiting this country from commonwealth countries for receptions at the palace than with second, third, fourth generation born Britishers.

At those it could have been a useful conversation starter and ice-breaker to ask where they were from to begin with and develop the conversation from there. In this case she met someone who didn't fit the profile she expected, and she wasn't flexible enough to adjust her "script" to suit. She was out of her depth. The bottom line is that she shouldn't have been there.

Why do these situations always descend into virtuous hatred of another human being?

What was said was wrong and the tone was most unpleasant but Ngosi was dressed in a very 'African' type outfit. Not victim blaming, just saying if I had seen her I would have assumed she was African, though I wouldn't have gone on and on.

Was she? Her outfit didn't look very "African" in the photo I've seen.

Which photo?
The one in the link in the OP wasn't what she was wearing to the event.

She could have taken the opportunity to educate Susan Hussey.

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable humiliating an unreconstructed old lady on social media, even if she was in the wrong.

Violated was a strong word to use too - she could instead have explained how proud she is of her heritage and given Susan Hussey a short lesson in history. Her outfit paid lip service to her heritage and is of interest.

This is what Ngosi Fulani was wearing. Draw your own conclusions.

But that's not "African" dress! Fulani's parents weren't African anyway.

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 20:21:11

She’s got a little list .
Don’t tell him Pike! 🤣

In that case Volver he is a fraud and should have his sporran confiscated, his haggis smacked and his bagpipes given a hard squeeze.😄

volver Wed 30-Nov-22 20:16:31

I have drawn many conclusions. None of them are about Ms Fulani.

If we're not ladies then why haven't toilets got women written on then perhaps that's why now it is usually a graphic of a sort of woman. to be politically correct
