Three boys aged eight, 10 and 11 have died after falling into an icy lake near Solihull on Sunday
Could have been our grandchildren - tragic

Heartbreaking, for the families and for those who tried so desperately to rescue them. My thoughts go out to them.

So tragic. Those poor families 😔My prayers are with them.
I remember when I was a child something similar happening.
Boys playing on ice at a local reservoir and one drowning.

Such dreadful news, their poor families. Sorry if this questions sounds strange, surely a child in that age range would be missed by mum and dad and if no one has reported a missing child I would think they have all those who were on the ice. Am I odd thinking that???

I suppose it’s better to be safe than sorry. To give up looking because no more children have been reported missing…maybe not the safest thing to do, as someone had reported 6 children on the lake.

This is heartbreaking, I just can’t imagine the agony that those families are going through, my thoughts are with them.

However, I remember as a child thinking that adults were just fussing when being forbidden to do certain things that they considered to be dangerous, and ignoring them and taking enormous risks which I can barely believe now. As my DH has just said, children are always attracted to water, whether still, flowing or frozen.

Such a terrible tragedy.

Truly a dreadful thing to happen. My heart goes out to all concerned, those poor families their lives will never be the same.
Great bravery shown by the Emergency services and others at the scene.

Children, even at twelve years old don’t have the knowledge or experience to realise that the ice they can see on a lake is only a few inches thick, so nowhere near thick enough to hold their weight.

The appeal of skating, sliding around will always be such a draw, especially as it’s a rare occurrence after a run of mild winters we’ve had.
Such a tragedy.

Greyduster Mon 12-Dec-22 12:46:40

This is truly shocking. Sadly, ice, and, in the summer, water of any kind, is like a magnet for children. My heart goes out to the parents and the emergency services. 😔

Ziplok Mon 12-Dec-22 12:46:02

Yes, an awful tragedy. My heart goes out to the families and also to those involved with the rescue operation - they, too, must be devastated at the outcome.

tickingbird Mon 12-Dec-22 12:40:26

I doubt parents were there. Due to the age range some were probably siblings. What parent would allow children to go on ice over open water?

We used to have public service ads warning against going on ice but haven’t seen one for years. People have died trying to save their dogs.

Such sad news, poor little souls

Grannyben Mon 12-Dec-22 12:29:57

May God bless all involved in this terrible tragedy. They would never have realised that a moments joy could result in such heartache

Wheniwasyourage Mon 12-Dec-22 12:26:25

crazyH, I think that travelsafar is referring to the reports that there is still a search going on because some people said that there were more than 4 children on the ice. I did think that too, travelsafar.

MaizieD Mon 12-Dec-22 12:24:11

It is a dreadful tragedy and my heart goes out to the parents, relatives and friends of those children who will be mourning them.

But, perhaps because we've had quite mild winters for a number of years, is it that people aren't aware that children should never be allowed to play on ice unless an adult has made absolutely sure that it is safe?

I'm sure that everyone will be spreading this message now; too late for those poor families, though.

crazyH Mon 12-Dec-22 12:12:51

travelsafar - their parents were probably there, but were helpless - these things happen very quickly. The ice on the lake was probably very deceptively thin. What a tragedy 🥲

Terrible news

So so sad. Those poor families. My heart goes out to all the emergency workers who did all they could for the young boys.

Kate1949 Mon 12-Dec-22 11:59:49

It's dreadful. Heartbreaking. The passers by and officers who tried to save them will be traumatised.

Poppyred Mon 12-Dec-22 11:59:23

Devastating.

tickingbird Mon 12-Dec-22 11:57:46

I believe two are still missing. It’s heartbreaking to think of the devastation visited upon their families,

Rosie51 Mon 12-Dec-22 11:57:09

Devastating, such awful news. Please let the 6 year old survive, although how he'll ever cope with the trauma I don't know.

silverlining48 Mon 12-Dec-22 11:56:30

As children we used to skate on a small pond near us. Parents not with us but we should have known better.
A heartbreaking tragedy fir the families.

Blossoming Mon 12-Dec-22 11:50:09

How awful, my heart goes out to those families.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 12-Dec-22 11:50:04

It's so sad for all involved. Much respect for the members of the public and of the emergency services who apparently went into the water to rescue the boys. They did their best and it's just tragic that their efforts didn't save the three who have died.
