Safe Haven Baby Boxes in America

I've seen this before in SA. It's not a new thing sadly.

I saw this recently, better than leaving the baby on a doorstep I suppose. Very sad.

I expect they will get more use I the coming months/years with many States having banned abortion.

Very sad, but my main thought would be better than a baby being abandoned somewhere where they might not be found, or die before they are found which has happened. If it is a newborn and the mother has given birth on her own then she will also need medical attention which should be provided, likely to happen more frequently given the draconian anti abortion laws in the States.

I think they're a good idea. Much better than dumping a newborn which might not be found.

Such ‘drop boxes’ have existed since Mediaeval times so it’s nothing new. In a country such as America where birth control and/or TOP can be difficult to find or afford, it’s probably the least bad option open to some women.

It must be pretty awful to be a child whose parent has given them away but I suspect in the future more and more of the babies will eventually trace their birth mothers because of the growing popularity of DNA testing for genealogy reasons.

American singer Mary Gaulthier wrote a whole album about being a foundling ,its heartbreaking .She found her birth mother but was rejected over the phone because the "mother" didn't want her family to find out about Mary .Its worth a listen .Its also a good idea to have a safe place to leave a baby but think there should be basic information on health etc put in the box with the child .

these are a very ancient practice; used to be seen as a kind of revolving basinet set into the wall of a convent.
it rang a bell when used so that the infant could be retrieved and cared for.

Yes it is true. And the company who placed the box has saved 23 babies over 10 years.

It is a very brave thing to do, help find a child you can't take care of or don't want find a loving family. We never judge a woman who would make that decision.

Babies can also be dropped at a fire department or police station, no questions asked.

A mother is very brave to decide she can't take care of, or doesn't want, a baby and helps find that child a loving home. Even if it is leaving that child in a box.

I’m not judging the mothers. I’m judging a society in which this is necessary. Just because it has happened since mediaeval times doesn’t mean it should be happening now. And the anti abortion laws are going to make it far worse.

I’d like to see a society where young women get the support they need to keep their babies. I assume you approve of the change in anti abortion laws in America.
