Rishi Sunak not wearing a seatbelt.

I hope he’s fined and apologises. If he’d been involved in an accident, potentially police, paramedics and A and E could be involved. It isn’t all about you Rishi, being busy/forgetting/whatever other excuse. Our NHS is in crisis, your health minister advised the public to avoid dangerous sports so as not add to the pressures during unprecedented strikes.

To me it shows that he’s not used to wearing a seat belt. He looked perfectly comfortable without it.

To me it shows he wasn’t wearing it. I’m not claiming things which might or might not be true because they fit my opinion of him.

If he gets in a car he probably puts a seatbelt on. Who knows? I’m not sad enough to follow him round to try and catch him out.
I’m more comfortable without a seat belt and it is easier to turn to deal with your grandchild without it on so it might well be easier to turn to an interviewer as well.

He did it. He’s been fined.

He should be warned though. If Twitter has a picture of Starmer, not wearing a seatbelt from 27 years ago, someone will be certain to retain a picture of Sunak not wearing a seatbelt for future reference.
Take heed. Numbers 32:23

I think with the majority of us it’s the first thing we do when in the car.

OK, I'll put my hands up here. I always do, immediately and without thinking, when in the front. (but not always in the back there, I've said it).

Twitter have a picture of Starmer doing the same.

Which was apparently taken about 27 years ago before the law came in. (I exaggerate, but it was before the law came in)

Must try harder.

Why is this an international news story? The journalists need to pull their heads in and get a life. Id sack those responsible and start again. Arrant nonsense. I don't want to have my time wasted listening to this drivel on tv when people are in terrible serious situations.

Agree..
Am I the only one who in the past, has realised.. S**t I haven't got my seat belt on?

I’m not in any way suggesting this story eclipses the horrors unfolding. I’ve now watched the clip which shows he wasn’t wearing a seat belt during an interview. I don’t believe taking it off to turn towards the interviewer more comfortably makes it ok for a pm to break the law.
Pity Lancashire County Police weren’t in charge of investigating those parties. They acted swiftly, no nonsense approach very welcome

He should definitely belt up, he talks on his videos like an infant school teacher explaining something to a bunch of toddlers.

VioletSky Fri 20-Jan-23 18:53:23

He has been fined

He was one of those fined for breaking lock down rules right?

Not the best example to set

Whitewavemark2 Fri 20-Jan-23 18:46:50

Is that twice he’s broken the law to our knowledge?

Smileless2012 Fri 20-Jan-23 18:46:16

I agree henetha a fuss about nothing much really, he's apologised and has been issued with a fixed penalty notice.

MawtheMerrier Fri 20-Jan-23 18:42:31

Idiot

pensionpat Fri 20-Jan-23 18:31:28

Apparently he has been issued with a fixed penalty notice. I expect if he pays it quickly it will be reduced. That will help him 😉

Ilovecheese Fri 20-Jan-23 18:27:54

It shows, I think, that he is just not very good at politics, not to realise how this would be pounced on. Or he just thinks that the law is for the little people.

Oreo Fri 20-Jan-23 14:35:53

It was a pathetic excuse? 😂 He didn’t say it, it was me thinking that might have been the reason.I know I can’t turn properly with a seatbelt on, inertia reel or not.

MaizieD Fri 20-Jan-23 14:30:07

It looked like he had to turn his body around for the camera.
Should have stopped to do the piece but I can’t get worked up about it.

Since the introduction of inertia reel seatbelts decades ago turning round with a seatbelt on has not been a problem, the seatbelt adjusts to accommodate you. It was a pathetic excuse.

I agree, it's hardly a scandal, but it was another mis step on his part. On a par with filling a borrowed car with petrol and not knowing how to pay for it! He's still not looking like a normal, everyday member of our society, is he?

henetha Fri 20-Jan-23 14:28:22

I think it's a fuss about nothing much really.
He undid his seat belt for a few minutes to speak to camera?
There are far more important things to be worried about.

I’m more outraged at the rubbish that was coming out of his mouth! Central government allocating funding directly to local projects on what it decides are their merits is a nonsense, the funding should have been handed down to regions and devolved governments to decide because they have a far better idea what the actual priorities are. Levelling up my a..e.

In Wales, the county councils put in bids for the levelling up funds so they will be aware of what they want for the area.

Perhaps you should read this, there’s been a long-standing disagreement about the way the finding was allocated to Welsh schemes.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-64324570

The same principle was applied throughout the UK, it was all about making the government look good, not about what local priorities are - asking a council to decide what it wants, and not having a process of looking at neighbouring councils to evaluate which scheme offers the most overall benefit is not the way to go. Also, it’s not levelling up if the most deprived communities don’t get prioritised.

NotSpaghetti Fri 20-Jan-23 14:22:33

I can't understand why you need to take off your seatbelt in order to speak.

I can understand taking it off briefly in some circumstances...

I have tried to Google MP/MPs not wearing seatbelt but unfortunately it's a search currently populated by almost exclusively by Sunak! grin

Makes me wonder how many other MPs never put their seat belts on when being chauffeured around. Laws are for the “great unwashed” maybe!! Nah, surely not!

Like the late Queen maybe?

Honestly- I think we should pick our (important) battles, and there are plenty around.

That’s what I think too.Plenty of real reasons to grumble.

Ilovecheese Fri 20-Jan-23 14:19:39

He has done a lot worse things than this.

MaizieD Fri 20-Jan-23 14:19:29

M0nica

Storm in a tea cup.

Most people have on occasion for some reason undone their seat belt for a (very) brief period - and immediately done it up again, almost always in circumstances when the chance of a full nose to nose head on smash at extreme speed on the motorway is virtually totally unknown

Let who ever is without sin throw the first stone.

'Doing a piece to camera' is absolutely no excuse for removing your seatbelt, MOnica. You can sustain injuries even at quite low speeds.
