Which 'global icons' would you expect to see on stage?

No Scots King or Queen was crowned in England before James VI.

before he was crowed in England.

before he was crowned in England. 😜

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 18:58:15

His son Charles I was also crowned in Holyrood, because the Scots insisted on it, and Charles II was crowned in Scone.

James VI was crowned as a baby in Scotland before he was crowed in England.

His predeccecors

They came before him

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 18:42:33

He was still crowned in Westminster Abbey as were his successors.

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 18:39:33

Yes you're right there gJ! I'm afraid this king can't do right for doing wrong with lots of people. All he can do is do his best and hope for the best. I believe him to be a good, sensitive, kind compassionate person, certain preferable to an ex minister with an eye to the main chance, and counting the financial reward. Only my opinion of course.

Allsorts Tue 24-Jan-23 18:38:51

He will do it his way, just hope H and M don’t attend though.

Volver as you are undoubtedly aware Scotland was an independent country, with its own monarchy until 1603, therefore it was, I think, fairly obvious that I was not referring to Scotland when talking about his unification of various English kingdoms under Athelstan. Coronations have been held in Westminster Abbey for over one thousand years.

Scotland had its own monarchy beyond 1603, the date when the King of Scotland took over the throne of England.

I would like to believe that any event surrounding the King's coronation will reflect his taste and wishes.

No-one else will be fully satisified whatever he chooses, of that we may all be certain.

My opinion is that it should be starring current British talent like Ed Sheeran Harry Styles Coldplay Clean Bandit Adele etc as well as Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey. There are many who are not still with us but I am sure that technology could make a compilation of previous stars such as the Beatles in their prime. I would like it to reflect King Charles musical favourites.

Gillycats Tue 24-Jan-23 17:28:37

Sir Brian May would be brilliant. Joy Brookes, Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys. Not Cliff Richard thank you x

I just pointed out that we have a long history of coronations as a united country.

That'll be 400 years then.

Less than Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Rude and dismissive? Perhaps. Inclined to believe facts rather than preconceptions? Definitely.

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 17:18:24

I have not said that we are special, I just pointed out that we have a long history of coronations as a united country. Scandinavian countries do do things differently, the other countries you mentioned do not have monarchies any more. Why are you always so rude and dismissive?

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 17:01:51

Other European monarchies do not have the long history of coronation,as mostly they didn't become one nation till many centuries later, and now don't exist.

The first coronation in Denmark was that of Canute VI in St. Bendt's Church in Ringsted in 1170.

The first crowned ruler of Bosnia was Tvrtko I. His coronation, held on 26 October 1377, created the Kingdom of Bosnia.

According to legend, the first crowned monarch of Croatia was King Tomislav. He was allegedly crowned on the Plain of Duvno in 925.

The first coronation in Norway, and Scandinavia, took place in Bergen in 1163 or 1164.

The first crowned King of Serbia, Stefan Nemanjić, was crowned twice. In 1217, he was crowned in a Roman Catholic ceremony by papal legate with crown sent by the Pope.

Swedish monarchs were crowned in various cities during the 13th and 14th centuries

Five minutes on Wikipedia. We're not as special as you think we are.

I'm sure the cost will be somewhere around the Jubilee costs. Was that £25 million? Plus security for the VIP guest list.
Just guessing!

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 16:54:35

It would be nice to have a classical concert , nothing heavy, Vaughan Williams, Chopin, Purcell perhaps, but I guess that wouldn't be popular so won't happen. Apart from the odd person, I've no idea who those performers named are, so couldn't say whether they're good, bad or indifferent. As for curtseying, if family members wish to bow and courtesy, that surely is up to them and nothing to do with anyone else. Members of the public certainly have that choice too. The coronation is definitely part of our history going back the first king of all England, Athelstan, who reigned 925 - 939 Every monarch except Edward Vth and Edward V111th have been crowned in Westminster Abbey. Jane Grey of course could be counted as uncrowned as well, but more often than not isn't. I think she should be as she was declared Queen ,but?? Other European monarchies do not have the long history of coronation,as mostly they didn't become one nation till many centuries later, and now don't exist.

Maremia Tue 24-Jan-23 16:47:26

Yes, chris888, I asked up-thread if anyone knew how much the Coronation was going to cost us, but no-one seems to know.

Maremia Tue 24-Jan-23 16:45:40

What about a band from the Bahamas, for the Concert?

chris8888 Tue 24-Jan-23 16:41:54

It is hard to get excited about a new king when you can`t get an ambulance, see a doctor or register with an NHS dentist. Food prices are rising and putting the heating on for many is causing anxiety and fear. Wonder how much the security for that lot will be.

SecondhandRose I've seen Lewis Capaldi 3 times and only on tv. First time I was shocked by his foul language. Thought perhaps he was drunk. Second and last time, language just as bad. I concluded perhaps he suffers from autism or Tourettes syndrome. Any info on this?

He has said that he has Tourette’s

It was a joke ffs!!!!!!

There was absolutely nothing in your post to suggest it was joke.

I was trying to be helpful.

IrishDancing Tue 24-Jan-23 14:57:14

I don’t really care who performs at the Coronation concert - the snippets I saw of the Jubilee one were dire and embarrassing. I shall watch the Coronation though - history in the making whether you agree with it or not.
And I agree with Jaberwok - the same “nasty, sarky comments” from those who know it all - on every thread …

Yammy Tue 24-Jan-23 14:55:10

Petera

I stand to be corrected but I believe that most other 'modern' monarchies don't even have coronations. Royalist or republican aside, why do we need it?

I think King Charles is probably the only one with that answer.
