So you thought voter ID was straightforward?

Of course not. The Tories never intended it to be easy. It's intended to disenfranchise poorer and less-educated people so they can't vote against this rotten government. The claim that it prevents voter fraud is bogus: there have been very, very few voter frauds. Most election fraud has been down to a very few candidates in my view. Voter ID does not address that.

Totally correct in every way. Think something like 30 suspicious voters were referred at the last GE, ONE was prosecuted.
This new legislation has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with preventing fraud,a nd everything to do with deliberately defranchising the young and anyone who may be likely NOT to vote tory!!!!

In the meantime (until ID requirement abandoned) get a postal vote. Bit of a faff to get the right bit of the form in the right envelope but better than queuing in the rain for hours.
Agree - voter suppression. Tories anxious to deter people so that they can boast that their percentage poll increased.

There is no reason for bringing this about apart from voter suppression.

The Tories have been learning lessons from the Republicans.

This twitter thread by ByLine Times reporter, Josiah Mortimer, takes a look at the checking procedure at the polling station.

It's a bit of an eye opener. It boils down to the fact that the IE you produce is subject to a number of challenges and the ID checker's decision is final. A particularly worrying instruction to the checker is that they can reject the ID 'If it appears to be forged'. How on earth would anyone be able to prove it wasn't forged (without carrying around a whole wad of *other8 ID?) hmm

It's to be hoped that Labour repeal this ludicrous law as soon as they get into office...
