Johnson and Trump

We all know that the privileges committee is to interview Johnson on Wednesday, and I find it very alarming that, just like Trump and his supporters, Johnson and his supporters are trying to undermine the democratic process of the privileges committee claiming that it is Labour lead.

Not true of course, - yes Harriet Harmon a parliamentary grandee and Labour is chairing the committee, but it is actually weighted in the Tories favour.

Someone recorded the number of times Trump lied during his presidency and it came to more than 3000 lies in 4 years.

Perhaps he lied before he was president and may still be lying now? Seems very likely.

Sorry, Trump has denied there was an affair and Daniels was paid by his lawyers to stop the allegations.

At present we don’t even know what the charges are.

He’s still on record saying how he sucks peppermints so he can kiss any available woman he gets to meet…why would they pay Stormy off if they thought her possible allegations were false? He’s even said if his daughter wasn’t his daughter he’d be dating her. He’s a vile, loathsome man.

I heard an American political commentator say just now that it will likely bolster his status short term within the Republican Party faithful, but severely damage his chances of re-election because the floaters don’t believe in him at all now.

MayBee70 Fri 31-Mar-23 13:33:48

As with a lot of things like this, this is a person who is going to be indicted for what is probably the most minor of the bad things he’s done. Didn’t his attorney go down for it? I mean, there’s no dispute about the fact that he had an affair with a porn star. And yet people still revere him and vote for him confused.

foxie48 Fri 31-Mar-23 11:26:18

I think this is just the tip of the iceberg but it will bolster his MAGA support and end up splitting the Republican Party. He's like BJ but on steroids, thinks only of himself and has no real political ideals! He will do and say anything to bolster his own ego and create mayhem. He's been so bad for American politics just like BJ has for British politics but I don't think he'll be president again.

Katie59 Fri 31-Mar-23 11:15:03

I was in the US a month ago and Trump still has massive support, they think the court case is entirely political ( it probably is).
IF Trump is nominated he might well win because Biden is a long way from the best President and has his own skeletons hidden.

Rule nothing in and nothing out.

MayBee70 Fri 31-Mar-23 10:56:48

I couldn’t sleep last night when the news broke! I thought, when he lost the election I wouldn’t have to see or hear him again but I can cope with seeing him in court. Why oh why are people so blind to what he is?

MayBee70 Fri 31-Mar-23 10:48:12

I don’t think it would. I think he can run for president even if he’s in prison. Wired isn’t it!

Yes, you are right - there were 70 Million “dimwits” that voted for Trump in 2020.

Plain and simple - he’s created a fascist cult. They hate America and anything with class.

Politics in the US is so polarized, to most Republicans Biden is the devil incarnate, Democrats have exactly the same opinion about Trump, there is no centre ground. We don’t know wether Trump will get a nomination, either way he will have a big influence

Wouldn’t being imprisoned exclude him from nomination? That seems the most likely scenario now.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 31-Mar-23 10:13:49

Reports that up to 30 felony charges to be brought against Trump next week I think.

Sentences for felony charges are more than 1 year in prison.

Trumps lawyer is in prison for a felony relating to one of the charges and said at the time of his charging that Trump should be made to pay for the same felony.

True to form like all populists Trump is busy gaslighting by blaming everyone else like the Democrats, “liberal” lawyers etc.

The First Gulf War was won easily in a few weeks it was a straightforward military campaign against an enemy with obselete armaments. No attempt was made to rule Kuwait or Iraq, most nations in the Middle East are virtual military dictatorships opposition is not tolerated.

Different sects of Islam are at each others throats, democracy does not exist, western interference precipitated widespread death and destruction and a migrant crisis of biblical proportions.

The First Gulf War was won easily...

Gosh, yes - I'd forgotten about that. It seems so long ago now.

Your second paragraph - just yes, that's how it is.

After 9/11 removing SaddamHussein was politically popular, he was out of control when he invaded Kuwait and had used poison gas during the Iran - Iraq war. Thousands of tons of chemicals had been supplied to Iraq, so the WMD campaign was floated. At some stage either the Gas stocks had been used up or destroyed but nobody believed that.

The mistake was that a stable government was never established to replace him, exactly the same happened when Gadhafi in Libya was removed. Then again in Afghanistan chasing Bin Laden was popular, trying to impose western democracy on Muslims was a total failure.

Polititians never learn from history Britain fought 3 Afghan wars lost 2, won 1 by bribery, the Russians lost their Afghan war, you cannot rule those that want to die for their god.

I think this is so relevant. That's why the "war on terror" cannot be won. You can eliminate individual insurgents, but obviously there will always be another to take his place - and another waiting in the wings to take over from him. In fact I believe the number of terror-groups actually increased - it's now trans-national.

I have absolutely no idea how this war can be 'won' - I doubt in fact that it can be. You just cannot impose western democracy on a people who adhere to a religion which, by its very nature, cannot really embrace democracy. A very simplistic observation, I realise, there are different 'understandings' and interpretations of Islam, not to mention the variations by scholars in Islamic philosophy.

As for Donald Trump... “I will quickly and decisively bomb the hell out of ISIS, will rebuild our military and make it so strong no one—and I mean, no one—will mess with us.”...
hmm.

At the very least, Boris Johnson - for all his despicable faults - had a tad more intelligence.

varian Tue 28-Mar-23 18:32:08

Johnson is good at nothing except lying and getting away with it - same as Trump. Why are they allowed to get away with it time and time again?

I totally agree with you. After 60 years of lying, he still doesn't do it well.

Nor does he do much else very well.

I watched that grilling by the committee. I think Johnson was hoist by his own petard, regardless of who was on that panel.

He looked, spoke and acted like the lying chancer he has always been.😗

Now I've seen the report that a school head in Florida (Trumpland) was 'invited' to resign because a class was shown an image of Michelangelo's David which one parent described as 'pornographic' I begin to understand how American dimwits can vote for Trump. Florentine art curators are said to be 'baffled' by the report.

Ever feel it’s two steps forward, 20 back

Paddy Ashdown was another politician who was extremely popular at Glastonbury Festival.

MayBee70 Fri 24-Mar-23 17:24:21

It’s the most popular podcast in the country at the moment. And their live shows sell out faster than Glastonbury I believe. In fact, I wonder if they’ll do Glastonbury this year? Tony Benn used to. I loved it when, when asked what they regretted about their youth, Rory said that he wished he’d read more when at University instead of ‘ trying to take girls out to tea’. Which must have made everyone listening to it chuckle.
