I had never heard this word before Boris how about you?

rosie1959 Wed 22-Mar-23 17:04:36

I have heard it before nothing particularly new

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Mar-23 17:32:37

Not new.

It seems to me to be like "mis-spoke" ie "lied, but don't want to admit it". grin

Is it similar to double speak? I’ll always remember the first time I heard the term ‘post truth politics’ because it was mentioned on the radio the night that Trump was elected. We live in a different political world these days.

Misremembered? Just ask a group of friends or family, or even a group on INSET about what happened or what was said and you’ll hear lots of misremembering!

I've heard of, and experienced, 'false memory' though.
I have a photo of my daughter as a toddler sporting a rather cute pudding-basin hair cut. She swears she distinctly remembers me cutting her hair by actually using a pudding basin on her head and cutting around it.
I did no such thing, her hair was cut at the hairdressers'.
If you can be bothered to try it yourself you'll see its well nigh impossible.
She's convinced however and delights in telling all and sundry its a fact!

(Sorry, that doesn't help the discussion one little bit, does it smile )

Misremembering? The word has been around since the 16th century, but words come in to use, fall out of use and then come back in again.

Having said that, it has been in my vocabulary, I would think, for at least a decade, possibly longer

Here is an interesting link. It includes a graph of its frequency in time. www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/misremember

I have some misremembered memories. I've accepted that what I think I remember isn't actually what happened. Weird though.

I thought it was dialect because my MIL (West Country) used it.
Have never thought it a loaded word.

Recollections may vary 🤣

Keeper1 Thu 23-Mar-23 08:46:33

Is it the same as having your own truth

timetogo2016 Thu 23-Mar-23 10:17:10

It`s short for stretching the truth.

Absolutely!

Yes I have heard of misremembering and have used it. It simply means remembering incorrectly and it’s in common usage as far as I know.

Norah Thu 23-Mar-23 11:51:50

People have used that word, effectively, for a long time. One remembers something incorrectly. Oh well, happens often.

The Economist: Franklin P. Adams Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a bad memory.

Oldbat1 Thu 23-Mar-23 18:14:33

Didn’t the Queen say that “recollections may differ” or words similar to that over something Harry and Megan recalled?

Grantanow Fri 24-Mar-23 10:05:50

I may be suffering from misremembering syndrome. I am recalling we have had more than two Prime Ministers in the course of one year. Is it serious?

Old interesting information! But useful)))))
