Yes, I would pay more tax than I do at present, if our services would improve.

Yup, me too. You want the services, you pay the tax. In Scotland, we have a slightly more progressive tax system, I am proud to say, but even more so would be better. I am lucky enough to be in a tax-paying bracket, just in case anyone thinks I want other people to pay while I don’t. smile

I’d vote for that. Higher taxes and public services that actually work, lower pension age.

Is this going to be a poll?

Higher please, like the French.

Well we’ve seen what our own system produces….

Taxes are definitely a lot higher, see below some figures and decide if you want to pay higher taxes like the French or lower ones…..

www.companow.com/

In France:

Gross Salary After Tax Tax rate
28 000 € 19 294 € 31.8%
45 000 € 26 616 € 41.2%
113 000 € 45 945 € 59.4%

In the UK:

Gross SalaryAfter TaxTax rate
28 000 € 22 906 €18.9%
45 000 € 34 428 € 24.8%
113 000 € 74 301 € 34.3%

Around 25% of the Salary of French people goes to social security, versus 12% in the UK

So if the French can afford a pension age of 64, why can’t we?

Their tax rates are higher.

Tax rates are higher, health service more efficient and pension age lower. What does that tell us?

It tells me that their government spends more money on the citizens than on themselves and their friends. I don’t know what it tells anybody else.

And the French state has control of its electricity and water, they support their heavy industries too.

Well done Macron, stuck to his guns.

Ilovecheese Fri 14-Apr-23 18:43:17

Not very democratic was it.

Thankyou for that info Mamie, I've been avoiding the news
these last few days and I did see my local garage being filled
up by a tanker today so hoped that was a good sign.
Fingers crossed the protesters will accept.

The Constitutional Council has approved the reforms which can be signed off now and introduced in September.

They have refused the demand for a referendum and have only taken out six minor clauses which will not have any impact on the pension age.
No doubt there will be a few more protests from the hardliners, but hopefully things will quickly calm down as the long weekends of May begin.
