It's repugnant and evil. To encourage anyone to kill any creature sickens me.

VioletSky

Trap, neuter, release.

That's what they should be doing

Yes.
It's not a huge country, it should be possible.

Quote from link in OP:
New Zealand's version of the RSPCA - the SPCA - had said it was "extremely concerned" about the planned event, but couldn't take enforcement action because no laws were being broken

I thought New Zealand was a civilised country. What were these people thinking of?

If the cats are feral and killing local birds they need culling , but not by dehumanising children .
And then thinking shooting pigs and deer is lesser evil !

No they don't! That's nature - red in tooth and claw!

TerriBull Thu 20-Apr-23 13:33:16

Horrible! horrible! horrible! Appalled and disgusted what kind of vile mind comes up with such a suggestion. Quite apart from loving cats, adoring them even. I hate the idea of any animal being shot, I know culling takes place, I know sometimes it's necessary,I lived close to both Bushy and Richmond Parks where that was an annual event, but kids taking pot shots at animals what kind of lessons would they take from that sad

Appalling. What an example to children.

NotSpaghetti Thu 20-Apr-23 08:33:38

And apparently with air rifles - so logically a cat-maiming competition. hmm

Redhead56 Thu 20-Apr-23 07:42:17

Totally disgraceful behaviour it would put me off ever going there.

Agree

I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing when I read this yesterday. How on earth could anyone think this was in any way acceptable, even for one second? If NZ really does have a problem with feral cats, this is NOT the way to go about solving it. To encourage anyone to go out with weapons killing cats is beyond belief, but children????

I saw this on Twitter yesterday, I have no words to explain how I feel 🤬🤬🤬

Foxygloves Thu 20-Apr-23 06:59:00

Sickening. We know the huge price paid in the US for encouraging permitting universal gun use even among children, but I had expected better from NZ.

NanaDana Thu 20-Apr-23 06:50:49

You could not make it up. Utterly beyond belief that anyone could think that this outrageous scheme should be acceptable to anyone, far less to children. And 14 year-olds are still being encouraged to go out and shoot wild pigs and deer. If this truly represents what is considered both normal and acceptable in NZ society, which I doubt, then something is seriously wrong.

BlueBalou Thu 20-Apr-23 06:10:37

WTH?
Is this serious? It’s beyond barbaric and utterly sickening.
I’m not particularly a cat lover but that anyone thought this appropriate is beyond me.

BlueBelle Thu 20-Apr-23 06:02:40

Good grief my family s there and I’d never heard of it
Who’d encourage children to shoot anything !!!!
Who d encourage kids to pick up any weapon to harm anything
Disgusting, words fail me

FannyCornforth Thu 20-Apr-23 04:58:13

It’s utterly bonkers isn’t it?
As if a Cat Killing Competitor isn’t bad enough - make it for children!

Louella12 Thu 20-Apr-23 04:51:06

Goodness me! Just shocking.

Who on earth thought that would be a good idea!

FannyCornforth Thu 20-Apr-23 04:33:43

Yes, really.
In New Zealand.
It’s been called off, unsurprisingly
