Has announced he will run for a further term. I like him but have doubts about his mental capacity. I would rather see a younger Democrat running.

foxie48, your probably right. There has been some criticism of KS, but even as they point out his flaws, I think people will vote for him because he’s likely to win just as they could well do for Joe Biden.

Trust you to say that. I would have expected no less and could almost feel it coming. He is too old.

Quite I agree plus he does not support the Uk much. He should be at home with his family or if he wants to work he should have a part time job, he is just too old and doddery for such an important position.

volver3 Thu 27-Apr-23 12:41:26

Maybe they're taking on at B&Q. Why don't you write to him and suggest it?

I can’t believe that a country the size of America doesn’t have a larger pool of potential presidential candidates.
Biden doesn’t impress. Trump even less so. Pleased to be here for the time being.

I thought exactly the same, neither of them have the skill to be in charge of any country. There must be a normal decent person somewhere in the USA

I really, really don’t understand why you keep insisting that this is a simple case of everyone saying a person may be too old to be employed, volver. It isn’t. What is displayed here is concern that a man already showing signs of mental decline is applying to be elected the most powerful person in the western world on a fixed term contract. Mental decline only travels in one direction,

hmm....

Perfectly rational view. Perfectly rational.

I will never understand the thirst for power. It seems incredible that a man of Biden's age would still want the enormous responsibility of office. It's not as if he would be twiddling his thumbs if he retired. There would be plenty of opportunities for him if he wants to keep active. It suggests he doesn't have much in the way of interests outside of politics. Perhaps he could take up golf. I believe Ireland has some good courses.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 27-Apr-23 13:03:57

By an objective standard remember, Volver.
Unfortunately I think Lizzie has just played into your hands though.

volver3 Thu 27-Apr-23 13:12:43

If anyone says he's too old and thinks he shouldn't have the job because he is 80, they are ageist and don't know it.

If they say he should get a part time job or just go and play golf because he is old, they are disrespectful.

End of.

(Sorry, I hate that phrase. But it does seem apt)

It would be like saying older ladies shouldn't drive sports cars.

Iam64 Thu 27-Apr-23 13:13:35

I like Biden, he seems to be negotiating a conflicted US reasonably well.
It seems likely there will be two older men running to be Potus. Biden does seem to be losing his mental powers , Trump has no ethics and would be a disaster for the US and the world.

Why aren’t there younger people seeking to be President

Sparklefizz Thu 27-Apr-23 13:30:35

For heaven's sake volver - don't keep banging on about Biden's age and misinterpreting people. I suggest you reread GSM's post quoted below:

OK Miss.

Sorry.

Must be my age.

(Just having a wee laugh about the request not to keep banging on about Biden's age. 😏)

I have absolutely no intention of giving up my sports car any time soon

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 27-Apr-23 13:41:18

Nor me GG.

ronib Thu 27-Apr-23 13:41:55

Volver 3 As an older woman I could not drive a sports car. I doubt I could even work out how to get in to it.
So that’s the litmus test- can Joe Biden drive/get in to a sports car. Easy.

enabenn Thu 27-Apr-23 13:49:48

The people you mentioned are not leaders of a big country like USA who have the capacity to make detremental decisions which could have an impact on world peace.

knspol Thu 27-Apr-23 13:54:31

I think that the incidents we've been shown on the TV of him becoming confused or wondering which way to go to get off a stage or getting names wrong show he's not particularly sharp anymore. Pity Hilary Clinton is so unpopular in the US, younger, experienced and imo a safe pair of hands. Still most people better than Trump!

ronib Thu 27-Apr-23 13:54:40

American Presidents are not allowed to drive anyway even if they still have capacity, which I doubt.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Apr-23 13:56:38

With age comes experience, wisdom and knowledge.

None of us here on GN have any knowledge of POTUS’s mental or physical capacity.

speculation is just old style gossiping over the fence

Indeed, ronib.

I still run a business, I still 90% of the time
turn the wrong way when exiting any hotel room, get lost in large Department Stores and Holiday Resorts.
I can drive to any given destination with the help of SatNav or just Road Signs. We all have our bete noir

Being unsure of the exit whilst on stage especially when you consider how many speeches on different stages worldwide that POTUS makes is not proof of declaring mental capacity.
If and when there is an announcement from The Biden’s or one of their medical team that POTUS is unwell that is when I shall believe it.

Gundy Thu 27-Apr-23 14:13:27

Yes, Biden supporters/Democrats in the US may prefer having a younger candidate run for POTUS in 24, but considering who the Republican candidate may end up being (Trump) there’s strong support for Joe because polls show he would beat Trump (who is clearly leading the party now.) Regardless of age.

There’s MAGA attrition. People are fatigued with Trump’s constant badgering of the norms, against government; legal cases against him are overwhelming; misogyny; using chicanery to operate like a mob boss. Republicans are marching in lock-step with him.

Joe is a complete opposite - has the most experience of anyone on how the US govt works; he’s quelled much of the anxiety following the attempted insurrection; passed some strong bills for our country; has united our allies across the world; has MORAL CLARITY.

Having a woman as VP is requisite! Whether it turns out to be Kamala Harris remains to be seen. (VP’s are selected, they don’t declare candidacy.) A year and half out is a long time in politics. Anything can happen, which could change the trajectory of the race.

Biden is not the doddering old fool - yet. As long as he can steer his administration on a strong and clear path, there’s a chance for another victory. Nature will take its course. Anyone our age is subject to a multitude of ailments. We live in the moment while we still have strength.

Thank you for taking such interest in our politics. We live in interesting times.
Vote!

Is this an appropriate time to mention Liz Truss not being able to find the way out of a room with one door?

Probably not.
