The Guardian has apologised after a cartoon depicting BBC chairman Richard Sharp was criticised as antisemitic.

The ex Chairman of the BBC is Jewish. The Guradian published a cartoon showing him withexaggerated features and carrying a puppet of Rishi Sunak.

One Jewish group said the cartoon fell squarely into an antisemitic traditionand that it was similar to other images which have depicted Jews with outsized, grotesque features, often in conjunction with money and power.

How many people at The Guardian saw this cartoon before it was published and did it not occur to any of them that the cartoon was anti-semitic? What about the cartoonist didn't it occur to him as he planned and drew it, and he would have given several hours of his mind to it, that it was anti-semitic?

In a week that has also seen Diane Abbot's anti-semitic letter to the Observer (why did they publish it? Couldn't they see it was anti-semitic?). What is it about the political left that cannot recognise anti-semitism when they see it?

In each of these cases in the last week, this racism has been egregious, not subtle and taking people quietly from behind. But leaping up and down and waving flags and no one on either paper saw a problem with the letter or the cartoon.

Would The Guardian have published this cartoon if the BBC Chairman had been Afro-Caribbean or The Observer published a letter describing racism as merely a prejudice? I rather does it.

So what is it that makes the left and their press so blind and cloth-eared to anti-semitism?

Dear me.

And I, apparently, am the touchy one. 🤐

You are who? Or what? Sorry I don’t know you.
Black, Muslim, disabled, lesbian? Please explain.

This has all got very weird.

Oreo Sun 30-Apr-23 13:06:49

Does Volver3 really think this anti-semitism and posters reaction to it is being touchy? Or is it really about getting in a controversial remark whenever possible? Hmmm, let me see
wink

With all sincerity, and you can all respond as you see fit.

I don't think its antisemitic, but I'm not Jewish, so if other people do think that, then I defer to them.

I didn't know this man was Jewish either. I think that the cartoon is about Johnson, who is sitting on top of a pile of sh**, and the effect he has on those around him. But when we start to get comments about how the inclusion of a squid is antisemitic, things have got strange, haven't they?

I thought that they "in loving memory" card after HIGNFY was tasteless, but nobody has complained about that, as far as I can see.

In this world, as everyone keeps telling me, we are entitled to our own opinions in this world. Maybe those complaining here today should also remember the oft-heard chant on GN - you can't say anything these days without somebody taking offence!!

Newflash!
You don’t have to be Jewish to dislike an openly anti-Semitic cartoon, which this was even if you don’t get it.

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:20:17

Newsflash!!

I get why people think its antisemitic, I just don't think that.

Still not getting the antisemitism inherent in a squid though...

Jewish folks only eat what they see as true fish those which have fins and scales. Which is why all shellfish and squid are not allowed to be included in their diet.

It's long been an antisemitic trope.

Oreo Sun 30-Apr-23 13:30:17

Or any pork products either.

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:30:58

OK, I'm only digging myself a hole here, but here goes...

Its not a squid, its an octopus. Which is a reference to an article about Goldman Sachs, who he used to work for.

So the complaints and the complainants are looking for something to be offended about. And this is a bit of a stretch.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:34:07

I think everyone is aware that depicting Muhammad, along with pork, bacon and even alcohol is deeply offensive to Muslims.

Maybe it’s time all faiths and their customs were respected and not ridiculed.

It’s only a couple of posters choosing not to get it, I think it’s best now to sigh and not bother answering.

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:39:09

Yes, I'm choosing not to get it. Because it's a mountain out of a molehill.

Move on, there's offence to be taken this afternoon, you might miss it.

How on earth has the left wing press become so staggeringly unaware of what constitutes Anti-Semitism, whether it is perceived as "casual" or not? First Diane Abbott's ludicrous outburst published in the Observer, in which she tried to establish some sort of "Hierarchy of Racism ", in which only black people descended from those who had been chained in slave ships were Premier League, with Jews and others relegated to the 4th Division, along with those who have red hair, all of whom have merely experienced prejudice. And now the Guardian publishes a so-called cartoon of which Goebbels himself, Hitler's arch anti-semitic propagandist, would most certainly have approved. And yet there are those who still try to either defend or down-play this, even on this thread. Casual anti-Semitism is clearly far more prevalent than I had ever imagined, even here on GN. Depressing.

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:40:30

I worry for people's ability to reason some days, I really do.

tickingbird Sun 30-Apr-23 13:48:20

The squid is an anti semitic trope and The Guardian are aware of that as is the cartoonist. Volver’s attempts to further downplay such a blatant slur “it’s not a squid, it’s an octopus” show us all who she is - those of us who aren’t already aware that is. As for posts stating cartoons always exaggerate features - well I wonder what the reaction would be if Dianne Abbott was portrayed with big lips, wide nose and Afro hair. It’s racism, pure and simple. Pretty sickening to be honest and as for apologies being the end of it, that doesn’t cut it when black people are the subject matter. People are cancelled and lose their careers over any perceived slur.

Thank you for the clarification Rosie

tickingbird Sun 30-Apr-23 13:57:34

It is a f***ing octopus.

Yeah right and Madam Sturgeon is an honest politician and Scotland will one day be free 😂😂😂😂😂

GrannyGravy13 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:57:44

volver3 any fish without fins or scales is offensive and forbidden to Jews, this covers both squid and octopus.

You have previously left GN because of the mocking of Nicola Sturgeon and the NSP, maybe have a little think of how you felt then and how Jews feel seeing that cartoon.
