It has got to the stage where it is hardly news anymore, hasn’t it ? What a terrible state America is in. I wouldn’t want to even go there these days. 199 th mass shooting this year. What an absolute disgrace to the whole political set up. Why don’t they DO something ?

They love their guns too much. They also can’t accept any changes to their constitution concerning gun control. They come out with a range of excuses including mental health problems and even not enough guns! I wouldn’t go there either.

Because they want the 'freedom' to own guns. Your life is at risk, though, if you go to a shopping mall - or to school. It's just madness.

People can on occasions become mentally and politically unhinged in the UK, but such disordered worldviews here don't have the logistical capacity here to manifest it in lethal violence as it so regularly does in the US

"Palakiko [a witness to the shooting] said he couldn’t believe how much ammunition the shooter had carried. “This guy was loaded,” he said. “No civilian person should be able to have access to that kind of ammunition. It’s insane.”

"Did the shooter hold white supremacist or neo-Nazi beliefs?
Police have not commented on any possible motive for the shooting, but a patch on the gunman’s chest at the time of the shooting, said “RWDS,” an acronym that stands for Right Wing Death Squad, according to people familiar with the investigation.

"The phrase is popular among right-wing extremists, neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they said".

Sadly, the gun culture is so deeply embedded in the American way of life, that I can't see anything significant changing anytime soon.. particularly with the strength of such pro-gun groups as the National Rifle Association, who constantly trot out "the right to bear arms" excuse, which they argue is "enshrined" within the constitution. The figure for gun deaths per annum is now approaching 50,000.. a truly chilling figure, which equates to around 140 every single day. I worked in the States for a year, and still have good friends there, who are in despair about what is happening to their society. Depressing.

Of course the Second Amendment has been hijacked. It refers to "a well-regulated militia" because, at the time, there was no national army. It was also based on the kinds of guns available to these temporary soldiers at the time, not semi-automatic weapons in the hands of obsessive civilians that can kill a large number of people in a short space of time. Such guns should never be in the hands of civilians – not for hunting (ha, ha) and not for personal protection.

I think the number of guns would outstrip the number of wild animals to be hunted. Anyway, what do they actually hunt ? You don’t need the sort of guns they have to shoot rabbits and deer. No one other than military should have access to those lethal weapons.

There was another incident in Texas on the same day. An SUV ploughed into a group of migrants killing 6 people at the scene and 12 more critically injured. Original reports suggested that it was deliberate and that the driver was shouting racist slogans but this has not been confirmed.
