Huge criticism from all sides.

Yet another Braverman ghastly bill.

there seems no point in trying to make time to get involved with those posters who view the world quite differently from the ordinary msn or woman on the street.

Well, pardon me, but I think that we're all 'ordinary men or women on the street'. Unless we have some celebrities on here who are keeping quiet abut it..

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-May-23 14:25:38

Ordinary woman on the street, you? With your PhD and all?

Indeed it is about numbers coming in boats as that appears to be the major concern. The clue’s in the title on the front page, or did you have to get to page 4 to understand that? Perhaps one has to be a highly qualified lawyer to understand the title?

Ah, good try.

At 13:55 you said: However the report to which I have posted a link gives some context to the recent increase in migration and some explanations of the reasons for it.

But it doesn't, does it? It doesn't claim to. Only you claim that.

I have read all the posts here and there seems no point in trying to make time to get involved with those posters who view the world quite differently from the ordinary msn or woman on the street. We have irreconcilable differences which no statistics or clever attempts to change minds will work. My experience of life is completely different from some people here. So it will be a relief to some of you that I have nothing more to say on this difference about our core beliefs. We will wait and see as Mr Asquith once said.

I don't expect to change your mind Annie1. I just hope that some people reading this without the rigid preconceived ideas that you have, will see sense.

I'm an ordinary woman on the street BTW, whatever makes you think I'm not?

If you use volver’s link you can see data for individual years by pressing on different points along the trajectory. Naturally none of us can understand a graph in the same way that Dr V can, unless we are highly qualified scientists, and indeed when we say we cannot read something she posts we are being wilfully blind. However the report to which I have posted a link gives some context to the recent increase in migration and some explanations of the reasons for it.

Well I'm only on page 4 but my immediate comment is that this report is about crossings of the channel in small boats, not about increases in migration as a whole, which is an entirely different thing. In fact the report's own figure of 30,000 is just 3% of the total number of immigrants.

I wonder if one needs to be a highly qualified scientist to see that? Probably not, but who knows?

However, still some way to go to get through the report...

Well for once, I wasn’t thinking of you V3! Perhaps you can explain to some people how to read a graph properly.. looking at long term trends and not just picking up on what fits your narrative?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-May-23 13:45:38

So Casdon = everyone else?

I’ve clicked on your very helpful link, which enables one to look at data for individual years.

Here’s a link for you in return - enjoy.

I was educated over 40 years ago (by a physicist who we all thought might get the Nobel, although I don't want to set people off again complaining that I boast about my background.)

If only I had an MSc from the LSE. 😔

Hardly modern. 🤣🤣🤣

ronib Tue 16-May-23 13:36:59

Oh my Lord…. What is wrong with modern education? Can’t even read a graph. I shall paint my nails!

MaizieD Tue 16-May-23 13:30:37

I can see all the numbers on my bog standard laptop. GSM. Let me help you.

Immigration soars after 2018.

It must be that nice tory government making the UK such an attractive place to come to...

Emigration is rising, too. I can't think why...

Greta Tue 16-May-23 13:27:11

V3: "^The present government doesn't like foreigners, who they think are going to come and use up all our precious resources. Or maybe they don't think that, but they pander to the people who do".^
Exactly. Brexit was a direct result of this.

volver3 Tue 16-May-23 13:23:29

Just a thought I had.

I posted a graph that Casdon "got" straight away, but you wanted to draw attention to the fact that it was illegible. Although everyone else could see it.

Just a thought that I had...

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-May-23 13:21:02

What exactly do you mean by that?

volver3 Tue 16-May-23 13:19:11

That's good news.

One is inclined to say then,

there are none so blind as those that will not see.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-May-23 13:17:30

My iPad is less than a year old and my eyes are fine thank you. Thanks for the link.

volver3 Tue 16-May-23 13:17:29

but I wonder where the houses are that they will eventually move into

Maybe if the government lived up to its responsibilities they might go home to their own countries.

Please maddyone, please don't fall for the scaremongering.

maddyone Tue 16-May-23 13:15:03

I’m going out for a walk now along the seafront. Maybe I’ll see a few migrants, I usually do, as a large hotel on the seafront has closed its doors to it’s normal guests and is fully booked (according to the sign on it’s door) with migrants. They won’t affect me as I have my own house to live in, but I wonder where the houses are that they will eventually move into, since we don’t have sufficient houses now. One of life’s little problems to ponder on as I pass them enjoying the sunshine on the seafront.

volver3 Tue 16-May-23 13:08:50

Maybe you need a new iPad then. smile

Have you had your eyes tested recently? Could be that.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 16-May-23 13:06:46

I did exactly the same but can’t read it.

Casdon Tue 16-May-23 13:04:55

When I say it’s totally illegible I mean just that. Don’t be so insulting.

I can see all the figures on my iPad Germanshepherdsmum, I just clicked on the image to enlarge it, then used my fingers to make it bigger still, it’s very clear then. Statista is a reliable source, it uses government data. And it’s revealing. .

volver3 Tue 16-May-23 13:02:18

Oh, OK.

Maybe you need a bigger screen.
