She gave information to the newspapers before the House of Commons about EU law U-turn.

Quite something from our mild mannered speaker.

I do wish however that Hoyle had found the cogliones to put in his place Johnson, rather than a woman Junior minister- even though she deserved it. So did Johnson, time and time again.

But yes, ANSWER THE QUESTION or be cut out and ask to sit down.

Kemi Badenoch is not a junior minister.

She is Secretary of State for Business and Trade, President of the Board of Trade, and Minister for Women and Equalities

Badenoch's gender is irrelevant. She talks to everybody like that and dismisses anything in the way of her agenda and career. She's the Secretary of State for Women and Equalities who doesn't even recognise inequality exists.

YES

Whether people liked him or not is irrelevant. He was doing his job. 100% agree. And he was very good at it.

MaizieD Thu 11-May-23 17:39:15

couldn’t stand Bercow who was arrogant and sarcastic.

Bercow was absolutely correct, though, in being always in the defence of the legislature, i.e the entirety of the House of Commons whose prime purpose is to scrutinise proposed legislation and hold the government to account over it, against attempts by the executive (the government) to bypass and marginalise it. He worked on the long established principle that parliament is sovereign, not the monarch as personified by the government.

Whether people liked him or not is irrelevant. He was doing his job.

Ouch! My respect from the speaker has increased hugely.

Mine too. I was a fan of John Bercow (I know he's not universally liked, but I think a speaker needs to be very firm about the law, and keeping rogue politicians in line), and thought that Lindsay Hoyle seemed quite weak by comparison, but this has changed my mind.

I agree! I too was a fan of John Bercow as a speaker, and have often thought Lindsay Hoyle a poor, weak substitute. Today's action shows he can be strong and uphold parliament's authority. I especially liked "who do you think you're speaking to?" Hoping this is a sign that he will be assertive and stand for no more nonsense from them, whichever bench they sit on.

Oh well if my grandsons spoke to anyone the way MPs do, they would be told to rethink and apologise. Clearly too polite to join the political class..

He tells the opposition benches off much more than the government benches…at least when I’m watching parliament he does.

I don’t think that’s true, he tells both sides to pipe down.Could be that the times you watch it the opposition MP’s are rowdier.
😄

Wyllow3 Thu 11-May-23 17:03:52

Growing better into the role? I'm expecting more firmness after this.

I think Hoyle is ok really, couldn’t stand Bercow who was arrogant and sarcastic.
He does tell all sides off when needed, but allows things to flow without treating MP’s like naughty school kids.

I wrote to the Speakers office last February to complain about the way that Hoyle had spoken to Caroline Lucas at PMQT. He was downright rude to her: the government benches at the time were like a baying mob. It was round about the same time that Johnson made his accusation regarding Starmer and Jimmy Saville and I complained about that too. Although Johnson’s comment was redacted it wasn’t done so as publicly as it should have been done. I know Berkow was a hard act to follow but Hoyle is very disappointing. I never got a reply.

Casdon yes I know it was this morning - Kemi Badenoch was dreadful but so was pmqs yesterday.

That’s for another thread, surely? This one is about breaking the rules not about quality of debate.

I find him a very poor person to be the Speaker. He may be a nice man but not in control in HoC. Ill watch this telling off and just hope im impressed for once.

That doesn’t matter when a cabinet member is breaking the rules though, this should be about what she did, not about him - any speaker would have rebuked her seriously.

I thought pmqs yesterday was pretty poor. What is the point of personal attacks when that’s nothing to do with the important issues facing a lot of people now? I think a code of conduct should be brought in …..

It wasn’t at Question Time, it was this morning.

Gosh! I’ve just watched it. He was livid.

Doodledog Thu 11-May-23 15:38:52

I also wish he would insist on MP’s actually answering the questions they are asked.
Oh, me too. They get away with far more than they would on Bercow's watch.

MayBee70 Thu 11-May-23 14:33:09

He gets very angry about things like that and quite rightly so. But it annoys me that he seems to come down very heavy on MP’s who spend what he regards as too much time when speaking in parliament: I’ve noticed that he is much more critical of the opposition parties. I’m very disappointed in him as Speaker. I also wish he would insist on MP’s actually answering the questions they are asked.

Indeed - bravo. At last!

Did she really say 'to all and sundry' in her 'apology???
