President Zelensky says Eurovision should not be held in the UK. If only he’d made that clear before, it would have saved us a fortune.

Well I shall be watching it tonight, with my adult daughter, we will be scoring every song, critique all the outfits, laugh a lot and just forget all the troubles in our world for a few short (but will feel endless!) hours - it’s a mad bonkers fest of hysteria and I’ll be joining it !!!

Indeed.

I matters not that I have no desire to ever go to Liverpool, what matters is that the economy and city council benefit.
It also matters that the inhabitants see some impact from the benefit to the council, wouldn’t you agree?

No mention of doing things they haven’t done.

That’s irrelevant. Any initiative which brings £30m into the economy would be welcomed with open arms by any city council. Regeneration is so important to the future economic stability.

Not bad for an estimated £30m return then?
www.cityrise.co.uk/liverpool-eurovision-benefits/

But will the £30,000,000 go back to the Council?
Will it go back to the replace the things Liverpool Council tell us they have been unable to do because of shortage of funds?
I don’t mind people making money out of it any more than I minded people making money out of the Coronation.

It’s all in the article. Under Economy section.

Businesses will keep going instead of perhaps folding through lack of customers, rates and rent will be paid to the Council, so yes, it will benefit the city.
It will also showcase Liverpool to those viewers in other countries who might think about visiting, as well as to people in the UK who might not have thought of it as a city break.

It’s so unfair and political it just isn’t worth watching now.

Australia might win ..... wink

I'll quote a piece from your link, Casdon, for those who don't like links:

Liverpool is a city with a rich cultural background, with many world-renowned musicians emerging from the city, from The Beatles to Frankie Goes to Hollywood. As a result, Liverpool is recognised as a UNESCO City of Music. This is a title awarded to top cities across the world for their historical contribution to musical arts. Additionally, the city was recognised for the state-of-the-art nurturing of musical talent through the form of education.

The fees might be given by overseas Broadcasters but DID any other country offer to host? Maybe we were the only ones we always seem to be the Jasper Carrot character "Wiggy gets it right",but in reality wrong.

Read the attachments on the post Bella23. Boris Johnson offered, and the UK was second so was the natural choice when it became clear it would be impossible for Ukraine to host it.

I cannot see that was wrong in any way.
It was the decent thing to do.

(And the UK entry would have won under other circumstances)

To host Eurovision, Liverpool city council will be using €2.3 million of council funds

The host country doesn’t pay for all of it.

An unfortunate comment from someone with a lot on his mind. He shouldn't be embroiling himself in song contests.
All the expenses they cost to the host country. As usual, Britain gets it wrong. Did anyone else offer?
We could use all the money on the NHS, Education and Train Services.

It's a tiny, minuscule drop in the ocean, the Eurovision Song Contest is mainly funded by fees from overseas broadcasters.

I don't think we should over-react to this which was probably just a casual remark from a man who has far more important things on his mind and is doing brilliantly with his very difficult responsibilities. I don't suppose he meant anything unkind towards the UK whatsoever.
I support Eurovision in spite of some songs being awful. It's a wonderful, mad, entertainment and is a way of uniting countries through music. And there are some good songs sometimes! smile

Absolutely. Zelensky is actually Britain’s biggest fan and he has praised this country many times. Of course he’s feeling disappointed that Eurovision can’t be held in Ukraine under the present circumstances.

Agreed.

The Government offered subsidised tickets to the contest for displaced Ukrainian refugees so there will, we hope, be a large contingent of people from Ukraine there.

I hope Ukrainian people in this country will enjoy the contest.

I must admit I was surprised we won last year, even though it was a great song & a bit too good for Eurovision. I thought after Brexit we’d get even less points than usual ( 30 points on average 😂 ) but we won!
Maybe Europe’s glad we’re out of the EU & that was their ‘thank you’ 😄

We didn't win!
😀

And then, mainline trains are on strike again so many people, including Ukrainians who are now living here, who had planned to go to Liverpool this weekend cannot get there. So, just in case any of you are now wondering about going, there is some parking in the city but also park and ride from Stanley park. Alternatively park somewhere on a Merseyrail route - Merseyrail is not striking - their network map online - or go to the Wirral and get the train or ferry across the river. There are also extra bus services. Just needs a bit of extra planning.
