So easy to say, when you are geographically the furthest away, to say they should all stay in first country, or stop in the last but one, hey ! Easy peasy! Let the rest of the world look after those Afghans who worked for us, and we abandonned behind. Hurrah.

These people are NOT illegal migrants. They are refugees who have the legal right to seek asylum in this country.

Give them a recognised legal route to the UK. Accept their claims for asylum and ensure that they are processed in months, not years.

Anyway the majority of immigrants come here entirely legally to staff our hospitals and care homes and do all kinds of other jobs that we do not have the workers to do.

The illegal immigrants and assylum seekers coming over by boat are merely the froth on the top of the huge number coming legally.

The trouble with the brexit vote a lot of people made it an anti immigration vote, they thought by voting out it would stop a lot of the illegal and legal immigration into the UK. Unfortunately it hasn't , these same people didn't want any constraints on their rights or any changes that affected them.

Vauxhall have stated that they are finding it difficult to stick to the source of origin because resourcing raw materials and the cost of energy.

Or as DH says when he refuses to argue with someone who is intransigent and blinkered. 'They have made up their mind, do not confuse them with facts.'

I came in to realise this as of course its been featured in the news all morning with comments from various people.

My opinion is that our government should change the trade deals and standards deals to fall in line with the EU so we can trade smoothly and business prosper. This its not reneging on Brexit: it's a sensible move given the consequences now obvious from the nature of the deal that was made.

I'm afraid the die-hards do think it's reneging - in fact they regard anyone who suggests it as a traitor.

I debated with one the other day - one among a sea of such - on a SM site where it was suggested that the EU is just about to fall-apart and disintegrate (bit of an old chestnut, that one). He was quite excited about the prospect... "can't wait for it to happen" he gloated.

When I asked him how he / we would benefit from the EU collapsing, he said something about it being the end of an 'evil empire' and anyone who still supports the EU, "should go and live there and good riddance".

Sometimes, conversing with such benightedness makes me almost lose the will to live. And so many agreed with him.

I should heed the words of the historian, Edward Gibbon. "I never make the mistake of arguing with people for whose opinions I have no respect".

Sounds a tad arrogant - until you realise such individuals have zero respect for your opinions.

While I agree with the concerns about how much is manufactured in China now, the problem with the car industry is nothing to do with car components made there. It is with Chinese car manufacturers: Aiways, BYD, NIO, Omoda, GWM Ora, XPENG, who are all, already in the UK market or planning to enter it that we need to worry about. It is worth [pointing out that MG, originally a Brritidh brand has been owned by a Chinese company for over 10 years.

Unless manufacturers in the UK can build enough cars here to be economically successful, they need to be exporting to the EU, and as things stand at the moment the Brexit agreement leaves us in a dilemma, either find away of building batteries and other parts in the UK pdq or hand out transport industry over to the Chinese.

There is more to colonisation than gun boat diplomacy, it also follows trade if it enables you to get a stranglehold on a strategic sector of another countries economy.

I don't know why the press keep giving Farage airtime, he is not the leader of a political party.

On R4 this morning, straight after the report about Vauxhall group, there was the shock horror report that the 40 hospitals Johnson promised are not happening as promised.

A BBC investigation has found that 33 of 40 supposed new hospitals originally promised by Boris Johnson’s government have yet to start work. The investigation looked at the announcement from the Tories which the government is still pledged to carry out.

The National Audit Office has already said it has started a value for money review of the New Hospitals Programme and report its findings this year. However, the BBC has found that only seven have started, with a deadline of 2030 for the scheme.

Indeed, only two are finished and open and of the six pledged to be completed by 2025 none has full planning permission or funding yet, the BBC said.

I’m amazed too, but the vote had nothing to do with logic or common sense. On the particular issue of local content of a product, if batteries or other components are supplied from within the EU there ought to be no obstacle, it benefits the EU.

Unfortunately we weren't told that it would be more difficult for businesses and the rest of us, even if it's just traveling for our hols.

I regularly read Homes and Antiques and looking back through my older copies I see that many of the homes featured are those of antique dealers who buy stuff in France.
Does anyone know of such a dealer and if so, how are they coping? I'm very interested to know.

The Tory party should disappear down a rabbit hole, never to return. Since they've been in power I don't think they've got anything right.

I see the pied Piper Farage is piping up. He led the UK population into the dead end cave that is Brexit along with the opportunistic Johnson. The population were not competent to assess the implications of Brexit and giving them the last word (a Cameron blunder) was a dereliction of duty by Parliament. Johnson's opportunism is unforgivable and I hope he never holds public office again. Labour will have a serious problem in addressing the mess created by the Tories.

I think Mr Farage should consider retirement. He doesn't appear to be contributing anything that's particularly useful to the nation. Except inform anyone who might want to listen that Brexit didn't work out the way he thought it should've done and it's all the fault of the Tories / Labour / Remoaners / the woke Left / the EU, individually, or all of them.

It might have been helpful if the ballot paper had been more specific - if voters had been given a few options as to what 'kind' of Brexit they wanted.

I mean, people knew what was in the box they voted for but they didn't know which items would be pulled out or left in. And now most of them seem unhappy with the way it's panned out.

... and now Sunak / the government is / are attempting to cobble together a 'Brexit-for-all-seasons' only to be shot down by Mr Jack-in-the-box Farage who just keeps popping up to tell them and everyone else that they've got it wrong. Wise after the event... it should've all been thought about and sorted out prior to our Brexiting... what a mess it all is.

Yes, this is another problem ... but the FACT is we can't get access to batteries and other parts.

The issue is that so much is made in China these days, an increasing number of consumer products including cars are made in China. That is in addition to the components made in China, the UK has been investing far to little in manufacturing industries for decades.
Jaguar Landrover are going to have the same problem soon because there is no battery factory to supply EVs, because there are several gigafactories in the EU with more planned, a new deal will probably be agreed.
