The fact that he not only knocked her off her bike but then ran over her should have resulted in a longer term. He was driving illegally while drunk and that is an offence in itself.

JackyB that must and still is a terrible memory for you. I cannot get my head around the sentencing that some/most receive, I know there must be some method to it but I will never understand it.

No oncoming traffic in *Blossoming's link.

If this is the incident you are talking about it appears that the drunk driver also failed to give way at a junction. He was convicted of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving whilst over the limit.

Without the reasons for the sentence given it’s impossible to comment, but the cyclist’s own behaviour may have played a part.

I have seen the video and it looks as though the cyclist was a bit reckless, riding across a busy junction in front of on-coming traffic. The driver was unable to stop in time to avoid her. However, he was 'under the influence' and that was his offence.

The lorry driver who killed my mother in law was fined DM1500 (back in 1992). I don't think he was even suspended, let alone sentenced. The reason given was practically that " she was old anyway". She was 81 but was caring for my FiL who was bedridden. She had just popped off to Aldi on her bike and only had a small purse with her with a bit of cash in it. It took the police all day to find out who she was, during which time FiL was just lying there unwashed and unfed. She had started to prepare lunch and had left out a packet of tomato soup ready to make up when she got back.

To this day I get the shivers if I pass the place where it happened.

I know nothing about it. Perhaps the OP can post a link to a report of the case?

I can't find anything about this one!

LadyGracie Fri 19-May-23 08:40:09

It looked horrific! Much too lenient.

BlueBelle Fri 19-May-23 08:35:14

Not sure what situation you’re talking about ?

Utterly disgusted when I read this, 2 and a bit years for not only knocking her down, but then carrying on running over her first with the front wheels then the rear wheels. The video is very graphic be warned if you do watch it.

Who on earth in their right minds hands out such a lenient sentence to a drunk driver that can do this.

So someone can go out get pissed drunk, n think "oh it's right if I knock someone down, it will be ok I can do 2 yrs" (no doubt they will serve only half of that)
