Well I never thought that I would have this in common with our PM…

His go to author when he feels the need to escape is Jilly Cooper.

She has been a comfort blanket author of mine since her first book Emily (I think I was 18) by the time Riders first in The Rutshire Chronicles was published I was a busy working Mum and can remember clearly falling in love with Rupert Campbell Black and all his faults and getting totally absorbed in the characters.

To this day he is my favourite bad boy book hero.

Gosh. I always though R C-B was vile.

Do you think that Sunak's choice of reading reflects his view of English society?

RCB was definitely a bad boy, but for some unknown reason I fell for him 🤣

As for the PM relating to Rutshire I have no idea, he just said he enjoyed the escapism.

DH and I know people who are so close to some of JC’s characters it’s uncanny.

Nah, he made it up.

She's my go to author whenever I've been ill. She's made me laugh and cry. The latter only over the animals.

I very much suspect that you're correct, Ilovecheese grin

Yeah, def made it up! There’s better rubbish out there to escape into. Why do politicians always try to make out they’re just like the average nitwit in the street?

Thank you for your description of me and my reading matter.

Sorry GrannyGravy13 don’t take it personally 😁 my comment was aimed at politicians who somehow think their choices make them more likeable.

Macmillan said he retired with a little Trollope.

I find it difficult to take a person actually liking Jilly Coopers writing gripping, seriously, just as I cannot see why people would read Every Shade of Grey. However, it’s each to its own. Give me Hamnet every time.

Do you call other people on here liars, when they say they read Jilly Cooper. No only the PM. Personally wouldn't waste money on the trash she writes, but each to their own. Perhaps he borrowed his wife's copy.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 31-May-23 09:15:04

I must be odd because I wouldn’t dream of being so snobby and dismissive of someone else’s reading matter?

Maybe because his wife was heavily into Bob Boothby all their married life.smile

Do men read Jilly Cooper? My ex reads novels but I’ve always found him to be the exception to the rule. And he would never read Jilly Cooper. My partner reads a novel occasionally but they’re usually Dick Francis. I am struggling to believe what the PM said to be honest.
