Some of you will have seen the TV programme that Prue Leith and her son made earlier this year, looking at the pros and cons of assisted dying.
Prue has written a letter to call on party leaders for a national debate on assisted dying. Here is the link if you would like to sign it:

They have 38,772 signatures just now - trying to get to 50,000

Of course it's appropriate Bella. It gives those of us who are in favour the opportunity to 'nail our colours to the mast'.

I can only hope that I would have the courage to do the same Hithere.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-May-23 19:00:17

Why do they need to be careful?

fancythat Fri 26-May-23 18:57:27

I think people need to be careful what they write on here.

Hithere Fri 26-May-23 18:11:25

I have put to sleep several cats as it was the best for them

I would do the assisting part for a loved one if that gave quality of life and dignity

DiamondLily Fri 26-May-23 18:08:45

I've got a degenerative disease, and I support it. But, I don't trust governments, whoever they are, so I've got a Living Will, and a stockpile of the drugs I would need to end it.

Shame that it's not easier though. 🙁

Riverwalk Fri 26-May-23 17:54:18

It's a no from me.

Who are you expecting to do the assisting?

Signed

I had that decision to make with my Mum. I would rather see suffering ended before it gets to that stage.

BlueBelle Fri 26-May-23 16:15:05

what would I want if it were me or a much loved family member?
I don’t have to think GSM I have lived it with both my parents and I had to make the decision of the treatment or not treatment that the doctors gave me, which on both occasions ended their life I don’t really understand how much further it would need to go to satisfy everyone

Not inappropriate

You can disagree with the request though
We all have our own mentality and believes and thats ok

Dottydots Fri 26-May-23 15:50:05

Signed and I wish it were in operation now.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-May-23 15:44:29

It’s not inappropriate Bella. We have had petitions for a number of things posted here. You don’t have to sign but it’s always worth thinking ‘what would I want if it were me or a much loved family member?’.

Thanks but I can’t sign I m just not comfortable with it I m not religious but it feels all wrong to me, no real explanation just that I m uncomfortable
It feels a much bigger subject than yes or no

I can absolutely understand where you are coming from. I think that perhaps we all need to completely understand the implications etc.

Well said Whitewavemark you have summed up what a minority of us feel. Is it really appropriate to put it on Gransnet?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-May-23 15:39:01

I’m religious but have no hesitation in signing Bluebelle, I don’t want to lose my dignity or to die in agony. That’s what we do our best to save our pets from. Our signing the petition won’t make a difference per se, but the intention is that the petition will lead to a proper debate in parliament where all angles of this difficult issue can be thoroughly explored. That is surely to be welcomed.

Yes I’ve signed. My mum died at over 101 and frankly she was fine until just after her 100th when she decided enough was enough. I’m 100% sure if she could have taken a pill she would have done so, even though she was not suffering in the way most people think. She became bed ridden and doubly incontinent. Her sight was very poor to the extent she could only make out shapes, but her brain was as lively as ever and she decided that her life had been well lived but time to depart this world.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 26-May-23 14:54:19

Signed. Thank you for publicising this GrandmaKT.

No I will never sign for this. Much open to abuse, what Dr , cause no harm, would willingly kill another human being. If they want it, let the relatives be the one to carry out the deed.

Bella23 Fri 26-May-23 13:19:09

I choose to not say. What and why I sign is my business alone and not part of a public forum.
