I've just read with sadness that my local MP Caroline Lucas is to stand down at the next election. She was so approachable and had such pure ethics and intentions.. She plans to spend her time looking at creative ways to make a liveable future a reality. I thank her and wish her well..

How sad that contributors have to snipe! Carline Lucas has worked hard in an unsupported role. She has spoken sense on many occasions. She will be sorely missed.

Truy disgusting comment.

She will be missed, and has stood for what is right, on her own, for so so long.

And I truly can't blame her for wanting her life back.

What a completely unnecessary, unpleasant comparison..

I have to agree, pascal30. Clickbait, or just an intrinsically unpleasant mindset?

Sincerity is a neutral characteristic. Hitler was sincere. Caroline Lucas, in many people's minds, is misguided at best.

Looking at the evident regard in which Ms Lucas is held, and the tawdry bunch that have recently appeared in the resignation ‘honours’ list, one has to wonder at the state of the uk political system.

She will be a loss. Hopefully, we will continue to hear from her.

While I admire Caroline Lucas, unfortunately the Greens don’t know what a woman is. Until some politicians like Sir Kier Starmer, Lisa Nandy and others in the Labour Party can support the 51% of the population who are female, I am politically homeless.

She's a sensible, ethical, wise woman. Always speaks well on QT and other political programmes. It can't have been easy working alongside a lot of male numpties. Hope she finds happiness in whatever she does.

I was saddened to hear this news, I like her and always listen when she appears on QT or whatever. A sensible voice. Hopefully we will still hear a lot from Ms Lucas as an ethical campaigner.

I've heard tell that altruistic, ethically driven MPs are very quickly whipped into the party line. If they don't conform, they have a very hard time. It's a toxic culture on both sides of the HofC... Horrible place to work if you don't toe the line.

I have no idea who she is but speaking in general I notice most decent ones don’t last above a few years, if that.

Grantanow Fri 09-Jun-23 09:34:26

It was hard work being the sole MP from the Greens. I wonder if the Greens will do as well in her constituency next time. It's true that Government is more difficult than Opposition though it must be pretty disheartening to know your Party is unlikely to get power.

Interesting that good, true and honest politicians rarely last the distance. Too many compromises to be made ? Mental health stress through working amongst liars and cheats ?

But it's not to do with lasting the distance.. she feels she can have more impact on working to with the problems of climate change and nature by not having to spend masses of time on other issues. She is the most hard working person I have ever met.. Over the past 10 years that I have been in brighton I have seen her at masses of local events campaigning or giving speeches, alongside her surgeries, parliamentary work and tv and radio work... she is totally committed and consistent. I hope she is as effective in the future.. we certainly need her

Rarely last the distance?! She’s been around forever, and more importantly has been entirely consistent throughout. None of that blowing in the wind crap you get from almost every other politician. She will be very, very missed.

A good and seemingly caring politician very rare
A shame a real shame wish a few more were like her instead of the awful crew that seem to always win and are only interest in themselves and hare hell bent on selling their souls to the devil for money and power

One of the MP’s that, whenever they speak I stop whatever I’m listening to and listen to her. My only criticism of her that I wish she was in the Labour Party! Apart from that I think she’s one of the most admirable human beings I can think of, past or present.

Oreo Thu 08-Jun-23 12:00:46

Well, you can be ‘ethical’ if you never have to put those policies into action and know it.Am not knocking those ideals but it’s easy to be the only Green in Parliament and go on about what ‘should be done’. Is she any good about other matters? There’ll be plenty of honest MP’s in all other political parties btw they aren’t all out for themselves.

toscalily Thu 08-Jun-23 11:01:23

I'm sorry to hear she is stepping down. Parliament would be a better place if their were more like Caroline Lucas, honest & ethical as she is, those qualities seem to be in very short supply where most politicians are concerned.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 08-Jun-23 10:20:24

One of the few good ones

MaizieD Thu 08-Jun-23 10:08:09

I, too, am really sorry to hear she is standing down.

Just think how different the UK could be if parliament were filled with politicians like her.

choughdancer Thu 08-Jun-23 10:04:00

I'm sorry to hear that she is standing down. An ethical, honest and caring politician; too few of these nowadays.

NotSpaghetti Thu 08-Jun-23 09:14:08

She was on the radio this morning explaining that the demands of the job mean she can't do enough work on the environment/climate.

Ilovecheese Thu 08-Jun-23 09:04:42

this is such a shame. She has been a real voice of opposition to the Government particularly with regard to civil liberties.
