Boris Johnson steps down as MP with immediate effect www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65863267

I wonder if he’s eloped with Nadine.

So the witch hunt has finally ended in success. We should all be very proud.

All those sycophants who accept an honour from this complete conman should be ashamed to be tainted by such corruption.

Assuming the privileges committee find him guilty on Monday, will there still be sanctions or has his resignation meant that he will escape any repercussions for his behaviour?

Deedaa Fri 09-Jun-23 23:07:15

Well I may not be dancing in the street but it has brightened up my weekend!

Primrose53 Fri 09-Jun-23 23:12:02

He will be back! Remoaners take note.

Doodledog

The Privileges Committee can only make recommendations. Then the Commons votes on whether or not to accept those recommendations.

According to Chris Bryant, the recommendations apply to present and future MPs, so if Boris is elected as an MP again, the Case moms would omm diately have to vote on whether to accept the recommendations. Sanctions (if the vote was in favour) would then come into force.

Siope Fri 09-Jun-23 23:26:52

I have no idea what my phone has done to that last paragraph.

It should say ‘if Boris becomes an MP again, the Commons would immediately vote on the recommendations, and if they vote in favour, sanctions are applied.’

Doodledog Fri 09-Jun-23 23:30:35

Thank you. What sanctions are available to them? (I suppose a lengthy jail sentence is out of the question?)

Brilliant - that news has made my day!

MayBee70 Fri 09-Jun-23 23:44:58

He’s still going to travel the world making a fortune. And says he’ll be back. How did the world end up with him and Trump at the same time: mirror images of each other.

Siope Fri 09-Jun-23 23:51:41

Doodledog: the Committee can recommend a period of suspension from Parliament. If that suspension is for more than 10 days (as would now seem likely in Johnson’s case) and the Commons vote in favour, it triggers a recall petition. If this is signed by enough constituents, there is a by-election. No prisons, no exile, not even a free trip to Rwanda.

Johnson’s nonsense about being forced out by a few people is therefore risible; the bar for getting rid of an MP is very high, and involves 3 democratic processes: the Privileges Committee, the Commons, and the electorate.

MayBee70:

'How did the world end up with him and Trump at the same time'

It just demonstrates a large majority of idiot/ignorant voters. Politics should be a compulsory part of the curriculum. He was called the 'Poundland Trump' by some.

i feel sorry for all the political commentators who had clocked off for the weekend, now having brush up and be presentable again.

Doodledog Sat 10-Jun-23 00:25:02

Thanks again Siope. So nothing is going to happen then. He lied, partied whilst others were staying apart from dying relatives, took the population for fools and walked away unscathed.
Bah humbug.

He’s emigrating to the USA so he can be Donald’s running mate. There is a faint resemblance, got to support family.

Daisymae Sat 10-Jun-23 06:32:06

Blaming everyone but himself for his predicament. I think that he fully intends some sort of comeback. I just can't think who would vote for him, or why.

eazybee Sat 10-Jun-23 06:48:41

I am shocked and appalled.
The duplicitous behaviour of Harriet Harman and Sue Gray speaks volumes, as does that of Rishi Sunak.
It has been a witch hunt.

M0nica Sat 10-Jun-23 07:00:02

Personally, I do not trust him further than i can see him with my eyes tight shut.

I think he has a cunning plan, yet to be revealed, that will either make his fortune, or be the downfall of the Conservatives.

Poor old Bozza. He was only doing his best 😢

Hmm, that wouldn’t surprise me.
The downfall bit. Definitely

Whitewavemark2 Sat 10-Jun-23 07:17:36

Both scoundrels (Trump and Johnson) are bleating, witch hunt, bias etc. The last vestiges of the liars and corrupt.

Ashcombe Sat 10-Jun-23 07:19:16

I cannot agree with those who say that this has been a witch hunt:-

“A witch-hunt is an attempt to find and punish a particular group of people who are being blamed for something, often simply because of their opinions and not because they have actually done anything wrong.” Collins Dictionary.

“There are none so blind as those who will not see….”
according to John Heywood in 1546, based on a verse in Jeremiah.
