Boris Johnson has resigned with immediate effect !

Here we are. TRIGGER WARNING ❗️

WW the rot absolutely did start with him.
And it’s astounding how rapidly and thoroughly it set in.
Furthermore, he has completely ruined people’s all ready shaky faith in the political system.
That might be his lasting legacy.
I’m reminded of that Private Eye cover, from when he was ousted as PM.
I’ll have a look for it. It’s bound to offend, though 🤭

Some very unworthy unpleasant remarks on here but no surprise. This will make them happy. But just think - he could be back like his hero Winston Churchill. Probably off to buy watercolour paints and some bricklaying tools!

Politics in this country is a complete mess. I can’t see much good whoever is in power. None of them are inspiring.

I’m afraid that the rot started with him. I just hope it ends with him, too but, alas, the electorate have got used to ( and even seem to like) politicians like him.

I'm not so sure Johnson is finished. I'd like to think so but he's so slippery and always seems to get another chance in life. That someone with his employment history should become PM would have been thought so unlikely before it happened. Time will tell I suppose.

Dorries' departure is a tantrum. Johnson's is an evasion tactic. But both are good news. Sunak should block him from standing ever again.

The opinion at the moment reading all the commentators is that Johnson’s political days are finished.

Well, at least he can do no more damage.

I notice that not a single post is extolling his virtues and political successes. History will make nothing of him, except a passing sentence on how lying only gets you so far.

Will he be back? I don't know. He wanted to be PM, but found that it was harder work than he'd expected. Now that he knows what's involved, and that he is expected to subsist on £120k (plus vast amounts of expenses) he might not bother. His politics don't seem to be rooted in belief, as his flip-flopping on Brexit showed, and he doesn't have unfinished business (eg his 'ready to go' solution to social care, or the diversion of the £350m a week from the EU to the NHS) to return to. He didn't bother with either in the first place, so it seems unlikely that he'll have a burning desire to finish what he started.

In my own list of prime-ministerial qualities, honesty and decency come well ahead of 'inspiring'.

And there is always the question, "Inspire to do what?" The examples of Trump and Johnson have been an inspiration to some others to copy them in treating the legal safeguards as so much unregarded bumff.

So the witch hunt has finally ended in success. We should all be very proud.

Witch hunt my eye. The man's past employment record and sackngs are eloquent evidence of his enduring mindset. The leopard doesn't change his spots.

I was surprised he did that, there is this report as the final nail but that man is covered in Teflon.
Boris has achieved one thing "fame" everyone knows Boris here and abroad.
We will always hear about him. He's not going anywhere!

I saw on Twitter last night, someone (very well known) said odds on he will form another Political party?? That I can see.

I meet him once, that man can charm, he's a real showman.
He's going to make lots of money, he's not going to go quietly.

It was actually Bernard Jenkin who did some of the hardest questioning in the committee hearing and as he is an arch Brexiteer I think we can rule out Brexit as a motive.
I think the committee was more interested in establishing the truth and upholding parliamentary standards.

When you marry the mistress you creat a vacancy. I am not interested in Boris. They are all as bad as each other in different respects.

So the dead man walking has finally accepted that in political terms, he is a corpse. Or has he? After all, his capacity for self-delusion is second only to Trump's...

Unfortunately I think Trump will be the next US President unless a miracle happens, and that the Terminator , I’ll be back!Boris will get a safe seat and another shot at Downing St.

It is Johnson’s peers in the House that would judge him, not the committee. He seems to have conveniently overlooked that small point.

I cannot agree with those who say that this has been a witch hunt:-

Both scoundrels (Trump and Johnson) are bleating, witch hunt, bias etc. The last vestiges of the liars and corrupt.

Personally, I do not trust him further than i can see him with my eyes tight shut.

I think he has a cunning plan, yet to be revealed, that will either make his fortune, or be the downfall of the Conservatives.

I am shocked and appalled.
The duplicitous behaviour of Harriet Harman and Sue Gray speaks volumes, as does that of Rishi Sunak.
It has been a witch hunt.
