The Labour Party and Free Speech

The announcement that the present Labour Mayor Jamie Driscoll will not be an acceptable candidate as NE Mayor has shocked the NE. Reasons given for this have ranged from him sharing a platform with Ken Loach, to him not being experienced enough for the post. Many Labour supporters in the NE are angry about this. Is sharing a platform with someone really a good reason? And what will happen to other Mayors.

I don't like the things he's done that I mentioned, but I definitely trust him to do better than Sunak and his band grin.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Mon 26-Jun-23 18:48:25

I don't like Keir Starmer for the reasons Doodledog gave. I don't trust him!

Casdon Sun 25-Jun-23 19:18:17

Ilovecheese

The impression it gives though, is that he attended a party in order to hear what Murdoch would like him to do in exchange for Murdoch's support.

It doesn’t give that impression if you don’t neglect to mention that Rishi Sunak,, various members of the cabinet, Sadie Khan, and a multitude of other notables were there. It would have been much more concerning if Starmer wasn’t there.

Iam64 Sun 25-Jun-23 19:14:36

I’m not as cynical about Starmer. He’s intelligent and will be much better for the country that any Tory pm in the past 12 years has been.

Anniebach Sun 25-Jun-23 18:01:35

Does it ?

No, I said I invited not told . Suppose he can do a Corbyn when asked about attending a wreath laying ceremony to terrorists
‘I was there but I don’t know if I was involved’ .

Ilovecheese Sun 25-Jun-23 17:33:34

Anniebach

Because he was invited ?

So you are saying that Keir Starmer should do whatever Murdoch's asks him to.

Doodledog Sun 25-Jun-23 16:38:29

I think that all parties should talk to people from all other parties. Their views may differ, but there is no reason why they shouldn't get along, and IMO it is very important that people can see the alternative point of view, even if they are never going to agree with it.

For one thing, it is impossible to construct an argument, without knowing what the other side is likely to throw at you, and for another, it is a fool who thinks that they, and only they, are always right - sometimes there are compromises that can be made whilst still achieving your goals.

I think that this is true of party leaders, other supporters (eg the Mayor in the OP) and of ordinary people in everyday discussions.

Galaxy Sun 25-Jun-23 16:13:52

I loathe the whole guilt by association thing that applies to Jamie Driscoll and Starmer. I dont care what show they have seen, what party they have been to or what tweet they liked.

Iam64 Sun 25-Jun-23 15:55:22

Now then Annie toe the line. Who wants a Labour leader who recognises the need to communicate with Murdock

Anniebach Sun 25-Jun-23 15:46:53

Because he was invited ?

Ilovecheese Sun 25-Jun-23 15:42:51

So Keir Starmer goes to Rupert Murdoch's party. Why?

Grany Fri 23-Jun-23 08:07:27

Starmers draft manifesto on the NHS doesn't go far enough only talks about staffing.

Grany Fri 23-Jun-23 08:04:56

Starmer won't ditch Mandelson over Epstein Freidship. Novara Media.

But he banned from long list Jamie Driscoll for talking about films with Ken Loach.

Do you want me to say more about KS?
No thanks grany. Have a rest day today and think pleasant thoughts.

Thats a good one grin

Ilovecheese Thu 22-Jun-23 19:37:49

I am not terribly sure that insulting people is the best way to bring them round to your (abstract "your" not directed at any individual poster) way of thinking.

Zen meditation helps some people who are shrouded in anger and negativity

There is not free speech now, due to these small groups picking over everything anyone says looking for sticks to beat everyone with. Rishi and Keir play the game. No belief or respect for either.

Grany Thu 22-Jun-23 00:27:21

The lying, cheating authoritarian, snake in the grass. We know what the tories are like not worth talking about. I haven't got time for them, useless. Won't ever vote tory. Starmer is out torying the tories, as he is likely next PM he needs scrutiny now. His economic policies are like tories. You have got to ask why the establishment would not allow a socialist leader who only had the best interests of the people, because the establishment couldn't allow democracy.
See Double Down News on YouTube Matt Kenard an investigative journalist. Worth listening to.

Thanks Grantanow
I’ve not seen any criticism of the government by Grany, just the usual nonsense

Anniebach Wed 21-Jun-23 10:21:09

The far left are happy with a far left leader and a conservative government

Casdon Wed 21-Jun-23 10:15:22

The overriding concern is for Labour to become the next government. Too much noise from the Left reduces that outcome. Public squabbling within the Party drives voters away. The Tories are usually better at presenting a united front but one can see their present disunity weakens their electoral chances.

Exactly this Grantanow. I’m becoming increasingly irritated by the nonsense the left are promulgating, particularly about the NHS.
