Glenda Jackson in the H of C speaks about Thatcherism and what it did to the country. Listening now it resonates still if not more now, www.google.com/search?sxsrf=APwXEdfjz7M3dfwx7SaLffxKqgFx6wAMkw:1686991445393&q=Glenda+Jackson+on+socialismand+poverty&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwijz93u9Mn_AhW9QkEAHVaoCLIQ0pQJegQICBAB&biw=1152&bih=562&dpr=1.25#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:4ba4e88b,

I have never heard Bob Geldof talking about a redistribution of wealth. It's possible I have missed it.

Glenda wanted very much to help those who struggled. She knew leaving acting would mean a huge loss of income for her but that didn’t matter because she was decent and passionate and wanted to make a difference.
We talked about this and many other things when we first met. She was an intelligent and inspiring woman who wanted us all to have the opportunity to drink champagne. Not just the wealthy few.

Frank Skinner, Primrose?
I don’t recall him doing anything of the sort, and I know him.

Holly quite right. Glenda was a very decent woman

Just watched Glenda Jackson in The Maids - she was brilliant .

RIP , Glenda .

Primrose, Glenda Jackson did care, that’s why she was a socialist and went into politics.
As a working actress, she needed to be in London.
Do you think she should have returned to Birkenhead?🙄

welbeck Fri 16-Jun-23 18:32:51

she lived in the basement of her son's home.
probably for support. mutual support.

Elegran Fri 16-Jun-23 17:45:57

I take it you know for a fact that she never contributed anything to any charity, Primrose ? Did you access her bank statements to find that out?

What exactly is a champagne socialist in your view , Primrose?

Go on then, I’ll bite but I am sure you know exactly what I mean. 😉

Very rich people like her, Geldof, Bono, Lily Allen, Emma Thompson, Frank Skinner and their ilk spend their lives telling us ordinary mortals how we should be giving to charities for the poor and our wealth should be distributed but they sit on vast fortunes, often have multiple homes in very affluent areas or countries. Glenda lived in a very posh area of London and has many millions. If they really cared, they would distribute their own wealth and go and live in Skegness or Bradford.

A life well lived. Love you Glenda.

Yes, do tell us Primrose. I’d love to know what you mean and why you think it applies to Glenda Jackson.

Seagull72 Fri 16-Jun-23 12:48:43

It wasn’t out of order. That’s what she was! A champagne socialist.

Nowhere near as bad as comments made about Nadine Dorries who is still alive.

Twopence Fri 16-Jun-23 11:56:59

I remember chatting to her once when she was out canvassing with the local Labour Party candidate. Wonderful actress.

Cambsnan Fri 16-Jun-23 11:38:51

I get that this needed to be reported but yesterday this was first on the news, above all those poor people who dies in the sea off Greece. I guess some people matter more! sad.

Oh and winking emojis when someone has just died, really?

There were some really nasty comments about Nadine Dorries on her thread and she is still alive!! GJ is hardly likely to be bothered by an emoji now is she?

hollysteers Fri 16-Jun-23 08:30:03

Another talented person from ‘over the water’ Birkenhead gone. Memorable films and a woman of integrity (not many of those in Westminster these days).
And what’s wrong with being a champagne socialist? I’m left leaning but like a glass of champagne!

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 16-Jun-23 08:25:16

A remarkable actor and a formidable political activist. Primrose, she was a socialist who wanted champagne for everyone, not just the elite few. If that makes her a champagne socialist, then I'm proud to say, so am I.

Champagne socialist! 😉

What a derogatory term for an Oscar-winning actress and serious politician who has just died!

RIP Glenda Jackson.
