This great country of ours is full of creativity, potential and possibility. The problems we face can mostly be traced back to our flawed political system, one that puts too much power in the hands of too few.

The campaign for a republic is about democratic reform, democratic principles and ridding the country of an institution that serves itself and those in power - the few, not the many.

Most people in the UK believe in democratic values and the importance of democracy in creating a prosperous and fair society. These principles and values matter. So our national institutions should reflect and celebrate those values, and live up to the highest standards of openness and accountability.

The monarchy stands firmly against these principles, instead representing exclusion, elitism and hereditary power and privilege at the expense of everyone else. It forces us to compromise our commitment to democracy to make room for this feudal institution. On a point of principle alone the monarchy should be abolished.

There are no good reasons for keeping the monarchy. Claims that it delivers stability or economic benefits are wrong. Yet the monarchy fails us in so many ways. Not least, it is a corrupt institution. The royals spend public money - your money - on their own travel, palatial homes and luxurious lifestyles every day of the year. The institution costs us at least £345m a year, money that should be spent on public services.

The monarchy is secretive and they demand - and get - exemptions from hundreds of laws, including environmental protection regulations and race discrimination laws.

In an interview in the DM today to celebrate Windrush Day, Trevor Phillips said of H&M

they could have been beacon of discovery and reconciliation, not just to Britain, but the whole world. Instead they completely squandered a golden opportunity to show everyone what this country is really like in matters of race - a country where no one disturbs themselves about marriage across the lines of race and ethnicity

But they constructed this completely ridiculous and unpleasant story about how maltreated they were - which, frankly, no one believes. No one cared about Megham's race. They could have made things different for millions of people, and they chose not to.

Camilla was seen wearing a Dior outfit at Ascot; perhaps she is going to be the new face of Dior.

I think that's not quite right though NotTooOld -

According to what I've recently read M is not going to be the face of Dior. It was just a rumour put around by her new PR company to distract from her sacking by Spotify. Another thing I read is that her interviews for Spotify were sometimes conducted by others, M's voice asking the questions being added later. Smoke and mirrors spring to mind!

I suppose it depends if you want to be talked about regardless of what's being said.

I suppose with Meghan she is what she wanted to be:
a rich woman with a doting husband;
famous (or notorious);
one of the most talked-about women in the world.

For the time being.

Grany the nub of it is that you can possibly be what you WANT to be but who in their right mind would want to be royalty? I am not sure I would want to be very rich either. There really is more to life than being rich.

I am actually not that sure that we can all be what we want to be. We all have physical and mental limitations. DH was unable to be what he originally wanted to be because it was a career that required good eye sight and he has seriously poor sight. DD would have liked to have been a ballet dancer, but her build was completely wrong. It hasn't stopped her enjoying dancing, but not professionally.

I have a mathematical ceiling, which I have probed, that meant most careers where the use of figures goes beyond the merely mechanical is beyond me. Likewise my dyspraxia excludes any requiring good balance or any physical precision.

Sure lots of mothers say to their children You can be anything that you want to be with a bit of effort determination and education. You can't be Prince Princess King or Queen. Thats for story books, only one lazy mediocre family in UK use those names. Those people get rich and richer, don't pay their taxes..Also called Head of State though don't defend our freedoms. They are good though at making sure many laws don't apply to them and that benefit them 🤔

the flat out lie that you can be anything that you want to put out there by Meghan snd others is dangerous. Especially where young people are concerned.
