Video emerges of Tory Party HQ Party during lockdown

A video has emerged showing some Conservative Party workers drinking and dancing at a Christmas party in December 2020 during the Covid pandemic. At the time, Tier 2 restrictions were in place, which meant that people were banned from socialising indoors, except with members of their household or a support bubble. Socialising at that stage of the pandemic was limited to up to six people in a garden or at a pub with outdoor seating. As the drinking and dancing goes on, one of the partygoers is actually heard saying it is OK to film "as long as we don't stream that we're, like, bending the rules". Clearly they knew exactly what they were doing, and this "do as I say, not as I do" hypocrisy is at the core of the Johnson- inspired culture of entitlement and elitism which has consistently treated the public with such contempt. The Police investigated the incident in November 2022, but no charges were brought. The Conservative party "disciplined" four of the attendees. Surely this now needs reviewing in the light of this new, damning evidence?

I think I read that “Joe Public” are still facing court summons for breaking Covid lockdown rules for holding parties. Some of these fines were in the thousand £s. I’m DISGUSTED with this Government especially Boris Johnson who has no moral compass. The honours list for his cronies should be cancelled.

BRITISH: a stupid or obnoxious person

Forgive me if I've got this wrong, DaisyAnneReturns, but aren't you based in Scotland? Even if it ever leaves the UK, Scotland will still be part of Britain, making you what you've said above too.

It’s all so sad, this happened at the time people were scared to death and struggling to follow the rules but most people did.
My poor daughter had an extremely stressful birth of her first daughter in May 2020. She spent most of her labour alone and afraid, hospital staff were extremely overworked. When she had an emergency caesarean the Doctor dropped his face visor into her cut. She was terrified about Covid or sepsis and had to have a strong course of precautionary antibiotics.
The day of a Tory party she has a photograph of my husband and I peering through a window for a glimpse of our new granddaughter, I didn’t actually hold her until she was 6 weeks old when I went into daughters bubble.
At the same time a good friends husband died in hospital alone and afraid she could only be with him the last few hours, none of the children could see him. The funeral was horrendous for her. People lined the path of crematorium 3 metres apart, I felt guilty I didn’t go as was too afraid for my granddaughter.
Many people may never get over the hypocrisy of this, the anger will never go. The apologies seem so lame, it’s unforgivable.

Well, Delila, they are all young and I guess fit and thought that would protect them. Also, they must have felt that partying against the rules was of no consequence. The culture in the conservative party was all about turning a blind eye.

Parsley3 Sun 18-Jun-23 13:29:10

It is just as well that this video did not appear at the time. God knows what the public response would have been.

Delila Sun 18-Jun-23 13:21:24

Why did they feel safer than the rest of the population were made to feel at the time? Was it just because, as Rees-Mogg said, they “all knew each other”?

NanaDana Sun 18-Jun-23 13:02:37

One potentially tragic outcome of the increasing number of "in-house" incidents in which it can be seen that Covid restrictions were blatantly ignored by some in power, is that come the next Pandemic, the population may be far more reluctant to follow lock-down instructions. Yes, we know that two wrongs will never make a right, but that may not mean much when emotions are running high, and there is still intense anger at the hypocrisy which we now know went all the way to the top. So God help the NHS next time around, as it may become virtually impossible to control it in such circumstances. What a legacy this bunch of self-serving idiots have left us with.

It's to be hoped that the tories are nowhere near government when the next pandemic lands...

Sorry about your daughter Granny gravyflowers I agree with everything you and FC say. Someone is drip-feeding information to bring down Sunak who they now realise is actually his own man.
I also agree Fanny it will influence people's behaviour should we have another pandemic. The inquiry as to what went wrong should not take years and dragged on. They seem to have made contingency plans expecting a Flu pandemic ignoring the fact that there had been SARS and MERS pandemics in Asia and the Middle East which were Coronaviruses. They need to learn quickly and get on with the forward planning for both if they should occur.
So many people lost loved ones and observed all the lockdowns. and rules. Will learning of the Concervatives partying make them less compliant in the future?
It's the old adeage do as I say not as I do.

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter GGravy thanks

Why did the video suddenly go viral this week? Who was holding on to it? How much money was involved?

I just think that if the event hadn’t happened there would be no video, the event was already known about but maybe not the extent of their physical closeness to each other. It has to have been released by somebody who was actually there, and the other people who were there will know who it was. Either way, they only have themselves to blame - if you’re innocent there’s nothing to tell.

My guess is someone/committee/think tank (insert whatever you think) wants to bring down Rishi Sunak, they are hoping by the drip drip drip of videos, pictures etc to achieve this.

I guess he is not being as pliable as those pulling the strings thought he would.

Fair enough, GGravy, I totally understand.
But the vulnerable will have to totally hide away.
In fact, due to my husband’s extreme vulnerability we are still not really going anywhere at all.

I am one of the vulnerable Fanny

I will just do what I feel comfortable with, my family like the majority of law abiding citizens protected DH and I.

We missed out on special 0 birthdays, we have two GC born just before lockdown who have been affected by not having access to baby groups and general social events. Our DD moved in with us as she couldn’t cope with a newborn, home educating a 5yr old and keeping the children quiet whilst her partner worked from home, consequently her relationship broke down and ended.

So much missed by so many, we didn’t lose any family members but we did lose dear friends.

I was willing to give the PM and those in No.10 the benefit of the doubt as till such time it was proven without doubt that they disobeyed their rules, that time has come…

Dandylion Sun 18-Jun-23 11:29:20

Boris's sense of entitlement gives him an exaggerated view both of his intellect and judgment.... but this has fooled many on his rise in society. A tutor at Oxford said he was the worst pupil they had ever had... and summed him up as 'a fool and an idler'....
Wise words, and not a person we should have anywhere near Government, but B's puffed-up ego, still works for many.....

Curlywhirly Sun 18-Jun-23 11:28:31

If it is true that the Police investigated this party but took no action, why? It's obvious that rules were broken. As an aside - how come those people were willing to put their families and friends, not to mention themselves, at risk of catching and spreading Covid? We were really scared to be in close proximity to anyone!

So, how many of these party goers lied under oath?

All of them surely or we would have heard about it.

Time for the Conservatives to pack their bags and leave the building.

What is really important is this:

How are the public going to react next time that there is a pandemic?

There is no way that they will comply as they did in 2020.

It’s a very scary thought; and it’s exactly what the Covid Enquiry should be focusing upon

Totally agree Fanny there is no way on earth that will make me conform again!!!

I will never be told who and how many people I can have in my garden let alone not seeing and hugging family members.

We have a family business, it would have been easy for us all to go into the office/warehouse/yard together as we were a protected business and allowed to trade (yes unbelievably the government had to give us permission to trade) but we didn’t.

No family members were in at the same time, we protected our family, our staff and our customers.

The more I think of the rules the more angry I become…

Good point, FC.

Thank you, and pity the poor bloody NHS

ronib Sun 18-Jun-23 11:12:53

Why are the police not investigating this breach of restrictions? Followed by the appropriate level of fines?
Weren’t some offenders fined £10k each?
