Colosseum vandalism.

Some absolute muppet has carved his and partner's names on a wall at the Colosseum! He was filmed by another visitor and video handed to police. They know who he is - after all he did carve his name! This can carry a custodial sentence - why on earth would anyone even begin to think that this was acceptable!

Juliet 27 , that has made me smile this morning 😊

JdotJ Sun 02-Jul-23 11:13:19

He's not a Brit. He's Bulgarian, living in Britain at the moment.

Bella23 Sun 02-Jul-23 11:16:26

Not condoning in the slightest and would never do it myself. Today's graffiti is historical evidence of a thousand years' time. Some idiot and his girlfriend visited the Colluseum in 2023.
Yes but what if we all carved our name where ever we fancy everything would be covered with Graffiti?

maddyone Sun 02-Jul-23 11:53:24

It’s just a matter of knowing when it’s appropriate. It’s not appropriate on the Colosseum. Street art is interesting to look at but defacing historical buildings is another thing altogether.

Anyone with an ounce of sense should realise that in our present times this is unacceptable. Tourists should have respect for these historical structures. Hope he's utterly embarrassed. He's an idiot.

Totally despicable thing to do. I once responded to an article elsewhere about a US woman and her children writing and drawing on the Great Wall of China, she was bragging about it and showing photos of what they had done. When I replied that it was vandalism and ruining one of the amazing things in the world I recv'd all sorts of unpleasant comments for my criticism. I guess it takes all sorts.

i think this is largely down to ignorance;
it is the kind of thing a small child might do, like scribbling on the wall-paper.
caught up in their own self expression and unaware, uncaring, of the value of their surroundings.

Yes I completely agree - pure ignorance with a large dusting of selfishness and self obsession. 'It's all about me and who cares if people get upset I'm doing it and I don't care who gets upset' attitude. angry

You were an advanced 3-year-old if you could write explanatory letters, on the wallpaper or not!

I’d certainly have been advanced if it was anything more than scribble but in my mind it was certainly a letter. Mind you, Auntie Grace would have had to travel over 100 miles to read it!

Bella23 Sun 02-Jul-23 13:54:10

I bet they possed for a selfie afterwards as well.

Norah Sun 02-Jul-23 13:55:41

Certainly not acceptable. No more acceptable than defacing Stonehenge.

Gundy Sun 02-Jul-23 14:40:11

This is so totally despicable! My first thought is the ONLY sentence to give this guy is to have him pay for the restoration if there would even be an attempt to do that without harming the ancient relic even more. I’ll probably never hear what the outcome of this story is. I’ve not seen it reported here.

Graffiti do become part of the history and patina of buildings and monuments. True of the former Reichstag in Berlin 'defaced' by Soviet soldiers and others in 1945 and I imagine Colston's statue will be preserved with its recent graffiti intact in a Bristol museum.

Saetana Sun 02-Jul-23 16:02:29

What an idiot! Apparently he is a Bulgarian living right here in my city of Bristol somewhere, the local newspaper covered the story. I have a feeling it won't be too long before he is tracked down.

I saw him!
He looked like Russell Crowe 😁

Utterly disgraceful brain dead behaviour. I hope he goes to jail and his stupid girlfriend for letting him do it.
No wonder most European countries hate the English it's because of dickheads like this!!!

Callistemon21 Sun 02-Jul-23 22:19:13

Well, not all English people are dickheads.

He may be British but he was born in Bulgaria.

Ivan is originally from Lovech, Bulgaria, and also works as a delivery driver around Bristol.

His girlfriend, Hayley Bracey, 33, is thought to run her own sports nutrition business and the pair live together in Keynsham, near Bristol.

They could face jail terms.

mumofmadboys Sun 02-Jul-23 23:06:58

It would be madness to jail him. We have far too many people in jail. A fine or community service would be more appropriate.

4allweknow Mon 03-Jul-23 00:36:24

Why did he bother visiting an ancient monument if he had no respect for maintaining it for others. Selfish twit. Anotger "custom" that annoys me is the padlock on fences/railings. Near an international wedding hotel near me, located in beautiful parkland there is a fence tgat folk hang their padlocks on when becoming engaged or married. Wonder if any of the couples would go and unlock them when they separate the usual couple of years later if the Council hadn't cut them off.

Saggi Mon 03-Jul-23 06:40:41

Todays vandalism( so called) is tomorrows’ history lesson.
Let it go!

Idiocy takes many forms, one would be asserting that "most" Europeans, hate the English because of bad behaviour by a minority hmm No idea how many millions, or even hundreds of millions that would be, maybe you could come back and give us a ballpark figure on that, so we can rein in any potential dickheadish behaviour on future trips to mainland Europe. Bearing in mind, as you state, huge swathes of Europeans already hate us, I'm sure we wouldn't want to fan the flames of their animosity by behaving like, eh let me think, oh yes! an English tourist!

Another form of idiocy is not reading the facts around where the person in question emanated from in this instance and then asserting he is English, he may well be British, but born in Bulgaria, as several posters have already noted, but not you it seems!

Saetana Mon 03-Jul-23 10:45:09

He has been found, reported on Bristol Live today - the Italian police got his mobile number from his hotel and left a message for him to call them, which he did. Apparently he expressed remorse and is now under investigation, they consider his girlfriend to be an innocent party so they are not interested in her.

I think it's the Italians who mentioned a term in prison.

The Coronation Chair, or throne, is covered in graffiti from schoolboys at Westminster School, usually concealed from the public.
Shakespeare's Birthplace in Stratford has graffiti on the walls, some from famous people, whom I suspect were encouraged to 'leave their signature.'
