I too have problems with remembering - or at least getting the info out from my brain. It's in there somewhere!

ronib I would say that most of us on GN have a knowledge about most subjects. We cannot fail to have picked up a lot of information about various subjects during our lives.

Or for that matter during our time on Gransnet - every day is a school day, for me at least.

Dinahmo yes I guess so - in my case the issue is remembering it….

Casdon Sat 01-Jul-23 21:22:55

I’d assumed Sunak..can’t he do that?

MaizieD Sat 01-Jul-23 21:19:54

Who is going to promote Rees Mogg to the Lords, Casdon?

Dinahmo Therese Coffey is Minister for the Environment and I go along with delegated government. Maybe contact her with your environmental issues. I don’t think Sunak is that grounded in economic theory since only did PPE.

Therese Coffey's constituency is what used to be Suffolk Coastal. She does not have a good reputation as a constituency MP, unlike a former incumbent, John Selwyn Gummer. Apart from the episode when he fed his children beef, he was very good, even though I did not and do not share his views. He now sits in the Lords as Lord Deben and is very interested in the environment.

Deedaa well before you get to work on a very small area of science, it’s normal to have a general grasp - B.Sc and M.Sc is not unheard of. Probably ‘A’ levels too and chemistry is not easy by any means.
Environment has a wide remit and I don’t know why it’s assumed that Coffey is not up to the job. It should not be impossible to learn about wild flowers and garden plants- there’s enough information out there. As one of my sons said ‘I learn something new everyday.’

Whether she is up to the job or not - she is absent on the job. Has been ever since she took the job.

Utterly useless.

Any chance of Rees-Mogg jacking it in, I wonder? I’m not holding my breath…

He might do, his place in the Lords is ready and waiting and his friends in the commons are gone.

I’ve been wondering about Sunak, and why he would want to stay, he could so easily go back to business I imagine. I’m sure he’ll see it through to the election because I think he’s honourable in that respect, but after?

If Coffey has a PhD in chemistry it means she knows a great deal about a very small area of science. It doesn't mean she knows anything about the environment. My daughter's PhD means she knows a great deal about plants on a molecular level. Her knowledge of wild flowers and garden plants is limited - and that's being polite!

I’m not convinced Coffey knows anything about the environment.

You want to speak to people in the EA - she is entirely absent - never been seen😄😄😄

ronib Sat 01-Jul-23 20:04:31

Coffey has a ph.d in chemistry so she has a head start over most of us.

It would be great to see some of the older, died-in-the-wool people move on and make space for younger people. Although I had no time for most of Dominic Cummings’ ideas, I did agree with him that parliamentary candidates should be schooled in economics and policy. There been some classic examples of lack of knowledge by senior ministers, in recent years, such as the importance of Dover and that Channel 4 ownership!

Those two examples are not necessarily related to economics. It's general knowledge and I'm sure that most of us on here wee aware of that. Economics does not train people to run a country. Look at Sunak - just not interested in the environment which is very now .

There are some big names. I’m personally sorry that Wayne David is going, he is an excellent MP.
To really understand what’s going on I think it would be good if the retirements were separated from the resignations. If somebody is over 65 I’d class that as a retirement myself.

ronib Sat 01-Jul-23 18:26:09

I think a fresh batch of mps is a very good idea- from all parties. We need new ideas and fast.

Casdon Sat 01-Jul-23 18:19:47

It will be interesting to see how many do say they are going in advance, because it’s a barometer of their pessimism about the election result. I wonder if the number will exceed the number of Labour MPs who left in 2010?

eazybee Sat 01-Jul-23 18:12:36

Angela Rayner will struggle, then.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 01-Jul-23 17:05:33

Do they look like rats? That would explain it if so.

Not only senior Tories!

Tories are expecting a mass exodus before the next GE. There are a variety of reasons given and so I am attaching a link to the Guardian article which gives much more detail
