What do you wise GNs think about the discussion on us going back into a single market.. will this help us with cost of living/recruitment/employment? . I voted against Brexit as worked and lived in Europe for 11pms and had better standard of living some 25 yrs ago -personally think a return would help us all.??

Honestly I’m not sure why the brexiters are in such a panic.

We are not going to rejoin very soon, and probably not in our lifetimes - if you are as old as me☺️, but I suspect there will be closer working - it is inevitable - this government has already started the ball rolling and Tory MPs are calling for closer working.

It is no big deal - the only difference you will notice are cheaper prices and full shelves together with jit back again which can only be good.

Ah, teh Rejoiners DREAM and LIES. The Pound never collapsewd against the Dollar and in fact appreciated against the Dollar whilst the EURo collapsed to Parity. The Eurozone is in RECESSION but not the UK. We saved Billions by not being in the EU and Our food Inflation is LOWER than the E.U. Only a tiny Minority want to rejoin the E.U.

Re your first claim: can you please explain then how my US income (a fixed US$ amount) was worth one third more in UK£ in September 2022 than it was in March 2022?

On the balance of probabilities of this happening, and by the way I voted to stay in, I would certainly show extreme caution no matter who got us back into the EU.
We all have to remember the perfect storm post EU nobody could have predicted the Pandemic and the millions of lives it took, and I certainly don't think whoever was leading whatever party at that time would have got it all correct. We should concentrate on how our health service had been decimated not just by this government but previous one's too.
We have far more urgent issues to be addressed than the EU and a possible return.

I’d like to see actual documented proof that we would be better off in the EU - that and proportional representation at the next election.

Where are all the new posters coming from? Have I missed something?

That’s what I wondered. This has happened before. Are they bots?

MerylStreep Thu 06-Jul-23 16:45:55

keep in mind it’s an economic club
It was until the Maastricht treaty was signed: then it turned political.

I don't think we should rejoin Europe. If everyone in the media stopped blaming all our woes on Brexit I think people would embrace being independent.

Why would people stop telling the truth Nagmad2016?

So what is a truth in this post

Only a tiny Minority want to rejoin the E.U.

In the latest poll I can find by Toby Helm of The Observer, dated Sun 28 May 2023 07.00 BST, he says:
A clear majority of British voters now favours building closer relations with the European Union, according to new polling that highlights a dramatic reversal in the tide of public opinion since Brexit.

Even in those constituencies that recorded the highest votes to leave the EU in 2016, more than twice as many voters now believe the best route forward is to move in the opposite direction – and forge closer ties with Brussels.

The claims in this post have not only not been verified, they seem to be untruths. Perhaps you could back your argumentcwith some facts Trurider1.

Sadly a lot of our woes are due to Brexit. Particularly our current government...

Well why don’t you go live in an eu country if you love it so much .

It's not that I want to go and live there or indeed 'love it so much'... but I'd like myself, my children and grandchildren to have that choice, as we used to have, without visas, red tape, medical insurance etc etc. I worked in Paris as a young woman and it definitely opened my mind and horizons and enriched my life... I just went there.... hassle free.

Visiting and living in other countries is valuable in so many ways. It keeps a person open to new ideas, embrace different approaches to living , cultures etc. which ultimately makes for a more tolerant and peaceful society. When this option becomes more difficult people don't do it as much.

Jess20 Thu 06-Jul-23 15:12:51

Can't see us being made particularly welcome or getting the good deal we were already enjoying as well as keeping the £. Even so, I'd like to rejoin as I've lived and worked abroad and watched my children's opportunities for work, study, cultural exchange and easy travel reduced significantly when we left. It's made us all poorer.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 06-Jul-23 15:02:07

I very much doubt it will happen on various grounds:

Do you really think there is a majority in the UK for re-joining EU?

Can either the UK or the EU really afford, given what Brexit has cost to spend the same kind of money on admitting the UK to the EU again?

Does Britain even fulfill the standards required with regards to energy, carbon emissions, commitment to outphasing diesel and petrol vehicles as soon as possible, combatting climate change, and all the other standards that applicants are expected to conform to?

Can the EU afford to let people join and leave at will then rejoin when they realise it was a mistake to leave?

I think you're right MiniMoon, taking on the euro would be a huge stumbling block and open boarders wouldn't be popular with many either.

All you have to do is engage to 'work towards' joining the euro.Sweden has been doing it for along time now, apparently..

Losing our sovereign currency would be a huge mistake.

Apart from that I'd say 'rejoin' like a shot.

That's interesting Maizie. Another useful nugget.

From my position on the fence (I now have a cushion) my feeling is there is no point in the shall we/shan't we regarding rejoining. We can't currently.

Closer union without rejoining would/should be good for all and certainly for our economy. The time when we are seen fit, as the third nation we decided to be, to join the EU, parliament will decide, because that is our democracy. We certainly do not need another referendum, although we could chose to restructure that democracy.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 06-Jul-23 13:55:59

Urmstongran Poland is also trying to see if they can have a referendum regarding some of the EU laws (particularly immigration) at the same time as the election in October.

Apparently it’s causing a headache as the ballot box for a referendum has to open an hour before the election starts and finishes an hour later.

Urmstongran Thu 06-Jul-23 13:50:01

And ‘well well’ again!

DONALD TUSK, who told Brexiteers they had a “special place in hell” when he was European Council president, has adopted the “Take Back Control” slogan for his Polish election campaign.

“During the Brexit negotiations in 2019, Mr Tusk criticised supporters of Brexit for trying to leave the EU.

But now he has echoed Vote Leave’s motto in a video attacking the incumbent Law and Justice party, as he seeks to become Poland’s prime minister.

“Poles must regain control over their country and its borders!” Mr Tusk said, before criticising Law and Justice for failing to stop migrants from Islamic countries arriving in Poland.”

A case of do as I say not as I do Mr Tusk??

Grantanow Thu 06-Jul-23 13:49:05

Rejoining (on worse terms) is a long way off because politicians are afraid of some voters who are misled by the noisy Tory right wing and the right wing media but I think it will happen eventually.

Nandalot Thu 06-Jul-23 13:44:56

There was so much misinformation about the EU that the referendum was totally flawed. Forexample, we could control immigration in part as only those with jobs, self employed or students had the right to stay beyond three months.
ukandeu.ac.uk/we-can-control-eu-migration-we-just-havent-done-it/
Regarding the EU rules, we always had the right of veto, though it was rarely used.
I would heartily welcome a return to the EU though we would never get such favourable terms.

Urmstongran Thu 06-Jul-23 13:44:15

Well, well ...

“EU laws which banks have been accused of using to close customers’ accounts over their political views are expected to be scrapped under plans being considered by ministers.”

I so hope we dont rejoin, our fishermen deserved better and in the harbour where I live there were big thank you signs everywhere, very moving. I felt so thankful we were out, hope our leave vote doesnt get reversed.
