I know the last thread was taken down at the op’s request - but if anyone wants to continue discussing this major news item I’ve started this one.

JenniferEccles Wed 12-Jul-23 13:04:51

Don’t be driven off Fanny.
You have done nothing wrong.

FannyCornforth Wed 12-Jul-23 12:58:33

Right, if people are just going to argue with me, and each other, I’m off.
It goes without saying that I can’t say what I really think and use examples, as you well know.
See you all later 👋

Kate1949 Wed 12-Jul-23 12:55:39

I agree. This is in the news. We are entitled to discuss the news. No one here has mentioned the person by name.

Iam64 Wed 12-Jul-23 12:52:59

After catching up with the last 3 or 4 pages, I’m driven to having a shout out for Doodledog.
I realise this could result in shouts of ‘clique’, an unpleasant, inaccurate response to posters who share similar views. Doodledog calmly, politely responds to insults to her knowledge and integrity.
This is a discussion on the news and politics thread about serious allegations made by the mother of a 20 year old man. He disputes his mother’s description of events. Information has dribbled out resulting in a lengthy discussion. None of this is surprising. What does surprise me is how rude some posters have been. NanaDana for example, accusing GrannyGravy of being patronising - projection there imo

No, I’ve just read his Wikipedia page

Where does it state on his Wikipedia page that this would be extremely out of character?

Anyone can add or edit a Wikipedia page so who knows what is fact on there anyway.

I’m commenting on his public persona

If it is who everyone is saying it is; then it’s extremely out of character

I didn't know you knew them personally Fanny.

No Doodledog you did not say ‘if that were true’ you said -

No, I didn't mean you grin. Or anyone in particular - I was speaking generally.

Maybe he will get help from a prison psychiatrist.

Dog, meet bone.

Maybe means 'there is a possibility'. It was a throwaway comment. This is not a court of law, and such things are allowed 😂

I also think that abuses of power are A Bad Thing and that vulnerable people should be protected. Controversial? Really?
You only appear to think that certain abuses of power are a Bad Thing though. You only seem to believe that being wealthy is enough to be powerful and to use said wealth to abuse others less wealthy.

You have demonstrated repeatedly on this thread your belief that a vulnerable child has been exploited by an older, powerful man.

You’ve decided who’s done what and to whom and you’ve already had the older man in prison being treated by the resident psychiatrist.

There may well have been wrong doing on the part of the older man but, equally, he may be a victim of wrong doing, but don’t let that stop you clicking your knitting needles.

No, that's not true. You are speculating about my feelings. I have commented on abuse of power by those who can afford lawyers and injunctions, but not mentioned other ones because they are not relevant to this thread.

Do I believe that a child has been exploited? I don't know about 'child', but I think that yes, a vulnerable person has been taken advantage of. I have not 'decided' anything, so please retract that. I have commented on the News, as have others on this thread.

I am not going to trawl back, but someone mentioned that they felt that the accused needed help. I thought that that was an odd way to see it as it ignored the fact that there are victims here, and commented that psychiatric help might be available if he is convicted and jailed. I have not 'had him in prison' as you suggest. You are twisting my words, and I'm sure you know that.

My knitting needles click a lot, but that's because I am a knitter. I have never visited a guillotine, but don't let that stop you being offensive, whatever you do.

Are you people always so rude? I have often thought that the accusations of nastiness that are alleged to happen on N&P threads are exaggerated, but as I say, I avoid both RF and Estrangement threads, so maybe I've had a sheltered life. I don't go on those threads as I don't have an interest in them, so don't see the point. I suppose I could start posting about how I find the RF an irrelevance, but what would be the point? I am aware that they are of interest to others, and respect that there are different ways of looking at things.

I am not making personal comments to anyone on here (although I do find some of you shockingly unpleasant on this thread). I am (like others, although I seem to be drawing the flak) mostly responding to questions about things like whether the first young man took drugs before or after meeting him, when I am directly addressed, to the lies about speculation and destroying people's lives, and to the name-calling and character assassination by those who don't think that this is a suitable topic for conversation are posting on a regular basis.

Anyway, I haven't seen today's news - did anything break overnight?

I also googled it thinking it would be on BBC news

I keep wondering if there's been a news embargo.
Does anyone know?

Sparklefizz Wed 12-Jul-23 11:44:19

I googled China/Taiwan too, feeling a sense of dread.

Yes, momb, I’ve been listening to Today this morning and didn’t hear anything; but I didn’t think that a poster would say it in jest either

Doodledog when someone posted that the unnamed man suffered with depression you spoke of him being seen by a
prison psychiatrist

In response to someone saying he needed help, I said that if that were true he might get it from there - not quite the same thing, is it?

Callistemon21 I have just searched Twitter and Google along with various news channels and can see no mention of China invading Taiwan anywhere.

Grammaretto are you able to provide a link please?

If it was posted as a distraction, or even worse, a joke, it was in very poor taste as the situation there is worrying.
I am 😥 and trying desperately to find out more without phoning her to find ut.

Worry not, Callistemon. There is no invasion, and the comment was posted as a joke, in very poor taste, bearing in mind what a potential flashpoint Taiwan is. Unfortunate.
