I know the last thread was taken down at the op’s request - but if anyone wants to continue discussing this major news item I’ve started this one.

well, I think out of character behavior such as this needs a serious health check.. brain tumours sometimes cause a change in character and outrageous behavior I think.

The young man is now 20. His mother alleges these incidents led him to become addicted to crack

Sounds like the "mum" has crawled out from under a stone for a bit of publicity about something that happened 3 years ago. I am always suspicious of such characters who run to the gutter press.

We have to be so careful what we say don’t we? Understandably of course.
This thread has lasted and it would be a great shame if it was derailed by disclosing something we shouldn’t.

It's very sad that these well respected, well paid people with families have to behave in this way. Naive I know.

That’s exactly how I feel.

I always try to see the best in everyone and give people the benefit of the doubt until proven guilty, which can be problematic.

Doodledog yes that’s what I meant.

tickingbird Tue 11-Jul-23 17:20:59

I think we all know who it is by now.

Maybe he will get help from a prison psychiatrist.

Why a prison? For a man in his position to be behaving as alleged on Twitter and dating apps and voluntarily revealing his identity there must be something wrong. Maybe a subconscious desire to be outed. However, this 2nd person is in his 20’s, from what I heard on the news, and, if true, regarding a threatening and expletive filled text, that won’t result in a prison sentence and nor should it.

Doodledog Tue 11-Jul-23 17:17:38

Yes, I suspect that he will be named very soon. As you say, it is not fair on others who may also be under suspicion.

AGAA4 Tue 11-Jul-23 17:12:53

How long can this man's name be kept secret? Many at the BBC will know who "he who must not be named" is apart from those who watch the programmes and notice someone is missing.
It must also be hard on male colleagues who may be absent for other reasons.

No, I didn't mean you grin. Or anyone in particular - I was speaking generally.

Maybe he will get help from a prison psychiatrist.

I think the BBC are between the proverbial rock and a hard place with their lawyers scrabbling around amongst the employment and defamation laws to protect itself.

Isn’t there an element of ‘oh no, surely not’ in this?

Do you mean because of the identity of the personality?

Anniebach Tue 11-Jul-23 17:06:54

Yes there is

So the presenter has been in contact with person 2, and not until later told him his real identity, meaning that the young person has a choice between keeping the secret or exposing himself to goodness knows what by way of exposure.

Are people still so keen to protect this man?

Who is protecting this man?

Certainly not me, I definitely think he needs help though.

Doodledog Tue 11-Jul-23 17:01:01

Sorry - my screenshots are from the BBC News app.

I’ve also been tied up with Wimbledon so am not up to date with developments in this story.

Kate1949 Tue 11-Jul-23 16:55:10

If I am not mistaken tickingbird (and I may well be) some people will have Googled the person whose name is being suggested. This would tell you if they have any medical conditions.

JenniferEccles Tue 11-Jul-23 16:54:23

I was also wondering about the
‘he suffers from depression’ comment, when we don’t yet know for sure who he is.

eddiecat78 Tue 11-Jul-23 16:53:57

The thing that amazes me about all these "scandals" involving famous people is that, despite appearing to be intelligent, it doesn't seem to have occurred to them that they will be found out

tickingbird Tue 11-Jul-23 16:48:44

kircubbin2000

The presenter suffers badly from depression so he will probably use that as his excuse.

How do you know this?

I’ve been watching Wimbledon so missed this. Listening to the news now and it sounds pretty damning. If he wasn’t suffering from depression before he will be now!

Kate1949 Tue 11-Jul-23 16:47:28

Yes* GrannyGravy* You are right they didn't say 'he'. My mistake.

The person has allegedly said they have written evidence of the threats.
And still Tim, dim but nice hasn’t spoken to the presenter.

BBC News Channel is reporting that it has seen the messages of the second young person and they are threatening and full of expletives
