Another Rory Stewart video

He explains a lot on TRIP’s why he was a Conservative. Interestingly, in the latest TRIP’s he has said how he disliked the way he was portrayed in the interview and also said the bit he hated the most was the interviewer saying he didn’t seem to like women, which was the bit that I didn’t like.And his mum was upset that his father was described as someone who smoked and drank heavily which, for one thing he didn’t do and she also pointed out that he lived to the age of 92 which was a pretty good age by anyone’s standards, so he couldn’t have led a totally unhealthy life! I’ve just found an old newspaper article and had forgotten just how many Conservative MP’s had the whip taken away from them.

I cannot understand why Rory Stewart was ever a Conservative.

As a student he was a member of the Labour Party.

His career has some similarity with that of Paddy Ashdown.

I agree with most of his views so it is obvious to me that he should join the Liberal Democrats.

Yes, the Buffoon got rid of some of the most honest, intelligent and far-sighted MPs in the Tory Party. Now the government is left with a number of loons and has to scrape the barrel when making appointments from a much reduced number of capable people.

Did anyone read the interview with Rory in Saturdays Times? (I can’t do a link). I’m not sure that I agreed with a lot of it: he didn’t come across in it as the person I’ve been listening to on the podcast. Eg the interviewer said Rory didn’t seem to like women as they knew he’d attended a couple of dinners and hadn’t conversed with the women who sat next to him. From things he’d said on the podcast I concluded that he was quite shy when it came to women; he said his idea of taking some one on a date at university was taking them out for tea. I didn’t find the interview vey flattering, but then I’m rather biased as I like him so much!

I first became aware of him in 2004 when The Places Between was published. He was invited to talk about the book on Women’s Hour.

What an opportunity was missed with Boris being chosen instead of Rory for PM.

It did. Thank you. The bit that got me was when someone at the end of the lecture pointed out that he’d done it without using any notes. I realise now why he sometimes interrupts Alastair during TRIP’s to make something clearer to the listener because Alastair will be talking as if they know the subject in greater detail than they actually do. From something he said the other day I’ve realised that Alastair is a great motivator and Rory is a great communicator. The great thing is there are lots of other talks by Rory on utube that I’ve now found including one on Lawrence of Arabia (whose brother lived in my ex’s cottage….)

Is it just me but, although I can access The Rest is Politics on acast, I struggle to find the ‘Leading’ podcasts.

Glad to see other Rory Stewart fans on here. I followed his Facebook page when he was still an MP and read his books as well. I've always liked him. The oafish Boris isn't in the same league.

Yes, it was a wasted chance to get the Tory party to head in a more enlightened direction. But leading Tories and their financial backers don't want enlightenment, they want to make thing better for themselves and their ilk - reducing what is available to improve things for the rest of the UK.

He wasn't just a loss to parliament he was our MP and got so much done for the constituency, especially after the storms a few years ago. He's a big miss.

Which thread is the other one on please? I keep meaning to listen to it…I don’t know how he manages to do so much: he seems to live out of a suitcase! I’ve liked him ever since he did a tv series about Cumbria years ago.

There is a very interesting comment about people thinking he is more of a Lib Dem at the end and about what views he has changed over the years.

Thank you for the link. I agree, he’s a loss to politics but I suspect the moment has passed for him, happy with his work elsewhere now. I followed his podcast with Alastair Campbell for ages but not recently. I’m off to listen to this interview…
