"Donald Trump has said he expects to be arrested by a federal inquiry into the US Capitol riot and efforts to challenge the 2020 election results."

Is he going to be called to account for this at last?

Good to know Syracute and hope you are right. You live in the USA so are more in touch than we are. We only know what we hear on the news. I just wish the populace would push for more representative, younger and saner leaders!

25Avalon Have you asked the people you know who have degrees and no jobs if they regret doing their degrees?

I expect they don't!

There will be a civil war in that country in the not too distant future. Trump has a lot of supporters who sincerely believe he has been unfairly ‘stitched up’. Scary bunch.

I can guarantee there will not be a civil war. There are more sensible people and they will show their presence as needed.

Norah Thu 03-Aug-23 21:55:56

Indeed.

MayBee70 Thu 03-Aug-23 21:45:29

How can this be happening? How come his supporters are happy that the donated campaign money is being used as legal fees?

There is an Americast Podcast on BBC Sounds and I believe they are due to drop another one this evening.

Apart from any betting, do you actually support Trump, MerylStreep?

MerylStreep Thu 03-Aug-23 18:15:09

Jon Sopel is of the opinion that Pence will probably loose what we would call deposit. He is also of the opinion that Trump could win the election.
I think I will place a bet when the bookings open.
I won a tidy sum when he first won the presidency so if he looses I won’t be out of pocket.

The strange system (to us), in America is that Trump could be convicted, still be elected as President, pardon himself and go from jail to the White House....😳

www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-12366601/JUSTIN-WEBB-Americas-slowly-waking-nightmare-prison-not-stop-Trump-elected-President-pardon-driven-cell-White-House.html

I know! It seems impossible to us here in Britain doesn’t it?
Please God he doesn’t get elected, in or out of prison. I’m quite afraid of that happening. The world is unsafe enough, I dread to think of the situation should he be elected.

My son lives out there, and some residents are getting genuinely concerned about the political polarisation out there ending in causing widescale civil unrest.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, many Trump supporters still remain convinced that the last election was stolen from him.🙄

They haven't got any rules to stop a convicted prisoner standing for President - I suppose this situation never occurred to anyone before.

Thankfully, under our party system, and long standing Parliamentary rules, it couldn't happen over here.

If Sunak was accused of all this, let alone convicted, he would be out of the job and any future in politics. These are serious charges.

Let's hope normal Americans don't vote for him.

Mind you, it would help if the Democrats could put someone more sensible than their front running candidate. Biden doesn't inspire much confidence.😗

I believe you can stand in a GE in the UK as long as you only have a year left to serve. How the affects becoming PM , I don't know.

DiamondLily Thu 03-Aug-23 17:46:40

74 separate charges..surely some of them must stick?

I saw him on the news earlier today. I know it’s quite trivial in the bigger picture, but he really is orange isn’t he? I could clearly see a line where he’s either applied some very orange make up, or he’s put very orange fake tan on. The white line next to his hairline was clearly visible.

Oldbat1 Thu 03-Aug-23 16:28:14

What a disgraceful man he is. He turns my stomach. I genuinely just dont understand the mentality of his followers. He needs to be incarcerated for a very very long time.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 03-Aug-23 12:34:51

Yes, but I think todays is by far the potentially the most serious.

lyleLyle Thu 03-Aug-23 12:31:01

I’m most excited about the election tampering charges. The Orange Clown got himself caught on tape telling officials to “find” votes for him to win.

I don’t know if anyone remembers but in the lead up to the election, Trump was constantly talking about fraud etc. Bannon apparently said that the game plan was declare a fraudulent election in the event Trump lost the election.

Sidelined Thu 03-Aug-23 12:21:45

I find it both scary and annoying that the majority of the press here report that it’s very possible Trump could win but don’t put his support into context. They say his fan base is huge, growing with every charge and hint that the election is in the bag - the prospect of President Trump again makes me despair. I’ve read US reports that put a different slant on things.

DaisyAnneReturns Thu 03-Aug-23 12:11:31

I would say, maddyone, that there seem to be some gaping holes in the laws to protect both American and British democracy. I would guess this is true in many democratic countries. Although what has happened here is very different I don't think it was any less worrying. The idea that we rely on people being "good chaps" seems such an anachronism that you have to wonder when it was "in place in time".

Apparently Trump has a solid 35% in the nominations. The question is whether he can raise that high enough to actually win the election, should he win the nomination.

Whitewavemark2 - the defamation case was won by the claimant but Trump refuses to pay her compensation and continues to call her horrible names so it’s back to court,! The man knows no shame!

Sidelined Thu 03-Aug-23 10:00:02

If the reporting is accurate, it’s incredible to think that a) the Republicans think someone as slimy as Trump is the best person to represent them, b) that Trump’s legal bill for this year alone is already more then $56m, all paid for by donations, and c) that all these charges don’t exclude him from standing for election and sitting as president.

Quite frankly if that happens I think it will throw the whole American judicial system into crises.
