I tend to think she must be insane. Killing babies seems to me a different order of crime from most murders.

She definitely isn’t insane, that would have been ruled out in the early part of her arrest. I think she is an expert conwoman, who hid her tracks, she certainly took in her senior nurse manager for the neonatal unit, who is ultimately culpable for not initiating a full investigation when two doctors initially took their concerns to her.

If she had been found to be insane, she wouldn't have stood trial.

We have no idea what is going on in someone else's head.

I am sceptical about this verdict. There is only circumstantial evidence. I suppose I find it impossible to believe that someone so normal-seeming should do such things.

I wonder if she has a sort of Munchhausen by proxy- making the babies ill so that she could “cure” them?
And then choosing not to?

It seems from listening to the news that a whole life tariff is very likely - in which case, whether this unspeakable person appears to hear sentencing or not will be irrelevent. However, I do agree with this proposal - those who do such evil deeds should face the music from beginning to end. Also those who refuse to say where murder victims are buried should never be considered for parole - that is surely the ultimate cruelty to inflict upon a victim's parents and family.

Needs an Inquiry into the hospital's actions.

The family of Olivia Pratt Corbett, who was shot in Liverpool last year, are campaigning for a mandatory extra sentence for those who refuse to appear for their sentencing hearing.

I think it is appalling that Letby, or any criminal found guilty, can somehow duck out of appearing in court for the verdict or sentencing.
I think they should face up to what they have done and face up to the sentence being imposed.

I agree. They should definitely be made to be there.

The fault for this seems to lie entirely with the management. Consultants continued to raise concerns and they were ignored and actually threatened a couple of times.

It seems that every single manager has left. In my view such a serious misjudgement needs to be looked at, they certainly should not get away Scot free.

I agree - it's a pity the management won't be punished for this, too. The reputation of the Trust was more important to them than turning this over to the Police.

What a horrible case - this would be awful wherever it happened, but my son was born at that hospital (before LL was even born). Those poor parents of babies born at the time that woman was working there...

In cases like this I struggle to understand if someone is evil or insane. Surely these were not the actions of a "normal" person. And does that mean she should be shown understanding and leniency? I'm not suggesting she should be - but the idea of someone actually being "evil" for no reason troubles me

The fine line between evil and insanity is hard for us to comprehend isn’t it? To commit these murders - even to contemplate them - is not the behaviour of any rational or sane person - but “insanity” cannot be excused to absolve her of responsibility.
Either she knew exactly what she was doing or she has diminished responsibility. And I think it is the former.

I am listening to the BBC news and I am open mouthed at some of the details that are coming out. Will find it very hard to watch the Panorama programme that is going to come out. Also the inquiry that the parents are calling for.
You can only imagine how the families affected are feeling .

Those poor parents -this trial has gone on for so long. Although nothing will compensate for the loss of their babies, I hope the sentence leaves them feeling justice has been done.

I’ve followed this trial, very harrowing for all, particularly the jurors.

Let's hope the sentence fits the horror of her crimes.

Justice at last for those poor families, although nothing will ever compensate for the murder of their much loved babies.
