I have just heard on the news of Prigozhin's path to power. Criminal -hot dog salesman- restaurant owner- leader of Wagner group.

I doubt it is fake news, enemies are best dead, not hovering in the wings somewhere. That is why Putin has made several attempts to kill the opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, before finally locking up and keeping him there with a succession of show trials on trumped up charges.

Prigozhin, was a far greater danger to Putin than Navalny because Prigozhin was a thuggish brute who would stop at nothing, where Navalny is a man of principle.
