oh I wish I was there. Looks like a great crowd. The BBC will say there were a handful, of course.

“It might be my senior memory failing me but I don't recall any of the Leave campaigners in the run up to the referendum telling us that we wouldn't see any benefits for 50 years...”

That was Rees Mogg sometime after the referendum

I know it was, Katie59*

I wonder why he didn't say it before the referendum hmm

hmmmmmmmmm yes, I wonder.

We were told we would stay in Single Market and Customs Union, no paperwork and checks for NI, that the NHS would flourish without all those nasty furiners, that husbandry would improve hugely and live exports stopped, that the environment and the waterways would all be pristinely clean, and on, and on, and on.

As a remainer I was shocked by the result, the reality has been somewhat worse than I was expecting. However there was no turning back and all we can do is make the best of it, I’m pleased that Starmer is talking about co-operation and no divergence.
We will see the reality of that in a year or two if he gets a working majority

grannygravy I trust you don’t buy anything from China?

I do my best to avoid it where possible.

Unfortunately for tech products it’s impossible to do so.

I don’t buy clothes from Asian sweat shops either.

Many Asian sweatshops are in the UK.

Well yes, good for you. So no bananas, oranges, tangerines, grapes, pineapples, strawberries and other berries or tomatoes, cucumbers, out of season, avocados, wine,, etc, etc, etc.

Fleurpepper are you seriously suggesting that Spain is the only exporter of that produce, you really are very funny.

No I am not saying this, I'd rather buy imported produce from Spain or other European countries, than Israel, for instance. And working conditions in Morroco and Northern African countries are NOT good either. Most people do not look at the provenance of food, but the price (not me, I am very careful with provenance).

This was reported in some depth in Germany. They say they would be happy for us to rejoin and would not make things too awkward.
I voted remain so that would be my choice but in reality it is unlikely, at least in the near future.

It doesn't help your cause, GrannyRose that nearly two thirds of the country now think that Brexit was a mistake and, that, demographics being what they are, a goodly number of the majority who voted for Brexit are now dead.

Your narrative of 'It was Remainers who messed it up' is nonsense. May's government was completely stymied by the ERG faction in the tory party and since then we have had a totally Brexit supporting government. Who have made a complete pig's ear of everything they've done...

Whining that the EU wouldn't let the UK cherry pick the bits it would like to keep is ridiculous. They were never going to do that and it is extraordinary that anyone should think that they would.

There is no prospect of rejoining the EU anytime soon, it needs the unanimous agreement of all members, that’s not likely for a long time. Starmer is talking about “co-operation” for that read accepting their rules in some areas, they are going to insist on freedom of movement as a first step to membership and I don’t expect that to be popular

The reality is that we had a lot of influence when we were members, now we have practically none, if/when we rejoin it will be their rules

No one said seven years ago that if we voted to leave people who voted the other way would make life so difficult that it would take us nearly 7 years to get a settlement. No one told us seven years ago that the EU would be so petty as to block sensible suggestions as to the way forward for the benefit of us all. Every policy that is put forward to take advantage of Brexit is scuppered or watered down by remainers. It doesn’t help of course that there are plenty of remainers in every party.

We are out now. Let’s stay out and work with what we have. Not continually harp back to the mighty pleasure dome that was the EU. Whatever it was in the past or might have become in the future had we stayed, it is not the same now.

There are problems all over Europe and indeed all over the world. No one can possibly know yet how successful Brexit has been. We were in the Common Market and its reincarnations for over 40 years. Why does anyone think we will be able to see the real benefits of leaving before 2056?

Because they told us that we held all the cards and people were queuing up to negotiate trade deals with us. Obama told us the a trade deal with America was unlikely and India’s possible trade deal with us if full of conditions. No one said 7 years ago that it would take 50 years to reap any benefits. And we were also going to control our own borders and stop illegal immigration. None of that is going very well, is it ( or am I missing something; I’m happy to be educated). And, if we’ve been in the common market/EU for forty years, using the same argument maybe we should have waited another ten years to reap the benefits?

Precisely, MayBee70

The EU hasn’t got any problems with the slave like conditions of Africans working in the thousands of square meters of poly tunnels in Spain producing fruit, salad and vegetables for the EU, or the subsequent plastics pollution and excess water usage

Shocking, isn't it!

I was so upset to see the workers being interviewed on TV.

How did you find out calistemon?

If you join Rejoin EU they will send you emails Silverlining

Can there be a greater self-indictment by the BBC of just how gripped by a politically motivated executive they have become as to not reporting one the U.K.’s largest rallies of the year about one of the U.K.’s most defining issues of the last decade?

Dr Dan Goyal

It's being reported as hundreds on France 24 and thousands by various British news media outlets.

It seems to have been rather a damp squib.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 24-Sept-23 18:21:28

I didn’t march, yesterday was my only free Saturday for the next four weeks

Any Gnetters at the Rejoin march today in London

Anyone?

Not even Gransnetters who are still incensed and upset?

Several of the friends I used to march with are either dead or suffering from ill health. Or, like me, can’t afford to travel to London and are worried about catching covid. A lot has happened in the past four years, unfortunately.

I couldn't march to the bus station to catch the bus to London. Not that I'd want to go again.

Only, FleurPepper asked the question and no-one answered.

Pointless. I voted to stay, but going back in would impose conditions that we never wanted.

I do think we should try for a more co-operative/friendly relationship with the EU,

What conditions will they be?
