By the end of this Parliament this Government will have raised taxes by more than any other in history.

Not only has it raised taxes to the highest level for, is it 60, years, but it has also 'borrowed, more as it did so!

I would ask one question, though.

While the burden of taxation on individuals is the highest for decades, is it actually producing an increased real terms tax take?

I'm not sure if your answer is here Maizie but Phil Moorhouse has done some analysis.

It's an interesting review of the report for anyone, of course.

But who have suffered the taxation burden most?

It is clear that the rich have become richer and all the rest of us have become poorer under the Conservatives.

If you are not a tax dodging billionaire Conservative Party donor, why on earth would you ever vote Conservative?

Perhaps we could be told what they are spending the money on. It’s not schools or the health service.

If you want decent public services for an ageing population taxes have to rise. But getting value for money and being efficient and effective in spending is also important. The Tories seem incapable of that given all the dubious contracts in the pandemic, ballooning costs of HS2 and underfunding of the NHS. We need a competent government.

Regarding your first sentence Grantanow I agree we would need to raise more taxes but that doesn't mean we have to raise more taxes from the same people all the time. I think a redistribution of how we raise taxes is long overdue.

I would also agree that we need a government that isn't playing the fool or playing anything else for that matter but one that is, perhaps, a little boring but actually gets the job done efficiently.

That will take you to the IFS website and a lot more detail.

Taxes may be higher in Europe but at least they have good health and social care systems. I don't think anyone would mind paying the necessary taxes for those things.

I do agree with the earlier posters. We need a competent ,honest government now.I am sick to death of this government's lies, their putting themselves first rather than the people they serve, their refusal to accept resposibility, their refusal to answer the questions they are asked in a truthful , direct manner.

Detailed analysis might show how much went to their chums, and we can't have that.

DaisyAnneReturns Fri 29-Sept-23 10:44:45

That's just how I feel Whitewave.

I would hope a detailed analysis would show we have invested in something, somewhere, but sadly I would expect to see a large amount has been waisted.

Ilovecheese Fri 29-Sept-23 10:37:55

They have just wasted the money, in the same way that they are wasting more money trying to break strikes than it would cost to pay NHS workers what they deserve.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 29-Sept-23 10:32:49

I wouldn’t be so bad if they were investing to grow the economy, but they aren’t. They are doing nothing.

Apparently households will be paying £3700 extra a year😮 before the election.

DaisyAnneReturns Fri 29-Sept-23 09:06:02

Is there any way we can insist on a detailed breakdown before the election?
