For those interested -

It would appear that after watching Kuenssberg, Sunak is indeed intending to cancel HS2. Apparently he is also looking at cancelling other major spends like Stonehenge and the Thames Tunnels.

He may not, however announce the cancellation at conference.

Sky news have just reported confirmation.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 14:46:56

I suspect that Peston is correct though.

On HS2 from No 10 spokesperson: “These reports are incorrect. No final decisions have been taken on Phase 2 of HS2”

You pays your money and takes your choice😄

I am told the PM has now taken the decision to shelve the Manchester leg of HS2. Confirmation, and detail of the re-allocation of funds to other transport projects in the north, will presumably come very soon.

I watched Sunak and Kuenssberg, but didn't hear Sunak give any hints whatsoever on cancelling HS2 - he remained deliberately non-committal. I hope your reading of it is better than mine and that he does indeed get rid of this white elephant.

How Liz Truss dare show her face I don’t know.

“Mr shoo’d in” (Sunak) wasn’t the choice of the grass root Tory voters. He doesn’t seem to grasp that. No wonder behind the scenes there’s a fair bit of positioning going on and canvassing of colleagues for support. I’m not even sure Sunak will be their leader at the next GE. Time will tell I suppose.

Not a grass roots Tory voter but interested in who you think would have been their choice and would it be the same as actual members of the Conservative party?

winterwhite Mon 02-Oct-23 14:29:24

Urns, Sunak must know he was third choice, and at that neck and neck with Penny Mordaunt. He prob also knows he is being scapegoated.
I still find it hard to think that the tories can choose yet another leader without a GE.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 14:16:34

Sunak is going to cancel HS2. To be announced by Sunak this week.

Says he’s going to use the money for transport for the North.

I’ll believe that when I see it.

Grantanow Mon 02-Oct-23 12:08:55

Coverage of the Tory conference seems rather thin this year. I wonder why.

Not a week it should read a year.

However, this is as we have come to expect a lie.

The government has been down this dead end before and as a result people died.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 10:47:27

According to Hunt 100000 people a week are leaving work to live a life of Bailey on the dole.

Tories showing their true nastiness yet again.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 10:13:33

Hunt channelling his inner Osborne and using benefit claimants as scapegoats for the governments incompetence.

Just about the easiest target of all aren’t they? No power, no voice, no money.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 02-Oct-23 10:09:10

It seems that this Tory conference is going to be characterised by factionalism. It appears to have split into a number of groups and everyone fighting everyone else.

Sunak seems to be a little voice crying in the wilderness.

winterwhite Sun 01-Oct-23 14:43:40

So what would you suggest, Lexisgranny, as a better way for the political parties to promote their policies to their wider membership? They are none of them painting the outlook as rosy.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 01-Oct-23 14:30:27

According to John Crace, the Tories have had to change the conference hall this year as they couldn’t fill it, and the one now booked is 3/4 empty.

Led by Donkeys have just put an excellent piece of journalism out there. Braverman will not be happy.

The conference season is upon us again (Sighs). All of them promise so much, paint such hopeful colourful pictures. Great if you are a fan if the Brothers Grimm and Leonid Afremov. Not for me I am afraid.

maddyone Sun 01-Oct-23 14:08:22

I really hope HS2 isn’t cancelled. What a phenomenal waste of money if it’s not completed as planned.

I see that Kemi Badenoch is another one throwing her hat in
the ring for leader and was unfortunately overh eard asking
what she should put in her conference speech to make it more attractive to the grassroots. So it goes on !

Quokka Sun 01-Oct-23 12:24:44

He’s delusional if he seriously thinks people can’t see through him (even the gullible who were taken in at the last election).
