Another death by an XL Bully

I read yesterday that police were booed, sworn at and generally abused when they put a hoop restraint round the neck of an xlbully. They were called because the dog had bitten a security guard. The dogs owner had his child with him, the boy was crying as police removed the dog. The crowd were against the police

How can you be warned not to walk in your own vicinity that’s madness
whether this legislation is going to go far enough who knows it needs a number of issues tackling at the same time
All bullies to be neutered and muzzled in public (the second won’t help anyone visiting the house tradesman, friend, child of the the owners etc ) mandatory for Vets to report such dogs, heavy fines or disqualification for anyone breaking the rules
This cross breed needs wiping out
Puppy farms of all dogs monitored and closed down
Much more attention is needed we wouldn’t be allowed to walk down the street carrying a loaded gun !

More people have been attacked today by a dog that had, at one time, chased a terrified child down the street and used to sit in the window of it’s house barking at the children that walked past. The attacked people have survived but the dog was tasered and died afterwards.

I agree the legislation isn’t perfect. My lab could almost fit the description. No doubt these irresponsible breeders will now cross the bully with a long haired dog, a German shepherd, a cane corso or a standard poodle given how many poodle crosses there are. The real problem is foolish, irresponsible people who think they know better than experienced ethical behaviourists and breeders.

I’m relieved xl bullies will have to neutered and muzzled. One on an unsuitable extendable lead made a bee line for my lab, despite me asking the owner to keep a distance as my dog can react if harassed on lead, the owner laughed.

I had a look at the Gov.uk description but surely there must be a better way. They know what breeds were used to make the xl bully surely a blood test could prove more.

I support the Berwick kennels; they’re the ones that rescued that poor starved lurcher, Tiggy the other year. The XL bully they are rehoming at the moment is a lovely dog but the sheer strength of it is terrifying. They are getting it used to the kind of muzzle that she will have to wear in future. As for the 14 week old puppy, if the owners were happy to buy an XL bully why are the not now prepared to do everything within the guidelines to lawfully keep it?

This is so sad Oldbat1 putting down a healthy dog that has done nothing but be of a suspected type.

So it starts. Berwick Animal Rescue Kennel manager has had a phone call from local vets asking if the rescue can take a 14wk old XL bully. This puppy was taken to be euthanised!!!! Unfortunately rescue cant because after 31Dec they are not permitted to rehome xl bully. They have a gorgeous xl bully which they are trying to rehome before end Dec. Poorly thought out legislation and typical knee jerk reaction.

Dogs homes will not be permitted to rehome those dogs who “measure” up as xl bully. Already being dumped and dogs homes are absolutely full necessitating lovely dogs being euthanised. I follow New Hope Animal Rescue who try to help. Labrador x could quite easily “measure” xl bullys are not a breed but a type. Look on the Gov.uk site and Gov plan to pay £200 to owners to euthanise such dogs. A form has to be completed by owner and vet. This makes me feel sick all these dogs being euthanised because owners will not put the effort in. Dogs currently pregnant will be no use and puppies will be euthanised.

They are by no means my favourite animal charity, though I do donate to them. I support a number of animal charities from whom I have adopted animals, ranging from Battersea to a local rescue centre which does amazing work, but cannot have charitable status and enjoy the financial benefits it would confer because it undertakes undercover investigations especially into puppy farms and factory farming, many leading to prosecutions. Quite ridiculous really that it cannot be a registered charity. Although local, it takes animals of all kinds from all over the country. Sorry, I digress - but unregulated breeding for profit has to end. I actually hate the very idea of buying a pet - something I have never done other than 6d and a tin of KiteKat for a white kitten for my mum from my friend’s cat’s litter when I was a child.

GSM, my vet is also the local RSPCA's vet, and he was quite passionate that one local rescue be shut down. I have however found it impossible to contact RSPCA about their policy; if you ring them they state they deal with only urgent and immediate cruelty.

I’m afraid I don’t. I would hope that given the number of dumped and abandoned animals they have to deal with, they would like to see regulation.

GSM, do you know what is the RSPCA's stance on breeding?

I have no time for the KC and their warped ideas. Many GSDs do indeed have hip displaysia because the KC liked to see a downward sloping back. I have no time for people who want ‘fashionable’ dogs either.

If the government say that existing XLs can be kept provided they are registered and neutered I would suggest that it’s incumbent on them to finance the necessary admin. Likewise if the campaigning charities which I support ever succeed in securing a system of registration of all breeders. Local authorities certainly don’t have the resources at present.

GSM, I agree there will often be rogue breeders. However such legal organisations as Crufts support dog breeding for profit, The public wants breeds with inbred faults such as mis-shapen skulls and hearts---even GSDs are often bred to have defective hips .

If the big and popular organisations such as the Kennel Club adopted the ethic of trying to stop animal suffering they would name and shame inbred defects , and rogue breeders of fashionable dogs would tag along.

I am concerned what will happen to the XL bullies that don’t have caring owners who will conform to the regulations. Will they be dumped or suffer in the hands of uncontrolled breeders.

I wish breeding could be controlled Caleo but there will always be the rogue breeders who are a big part of the problem, along with those who don’t bother to have dogs neutered or spayed. Neutering, a small operation, should be mandatory unless the dog belongs to a licensed breeder.
