Labour - party of building?

My heart sank listening to Rachel Reeves plans to be the party if building and infrastructure. It seems to me that those who are governing won't be happy until every square inch is concreted over. It really doesn't matter which party is in power. There's literally thousands of new builds where I live and a lot of it on agricultural land. Seems short sighted to me. Obviously people have to live somewhere but we need to be cleverer with what we have.

Poor Starmer had an unexpected cold shower on stage!
Probably by a far leftie.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Oct-23 14:47:22

Worked to his advantage though😄.

All that ‘glitters’ is not gold.

There are unisex lavatories everywhere now - it has become the norm. No one takes any notice do they?

Even in a little new forest town the lavatories were unisex and I would have expected what is almost a very conservative (small c) population to dislike the idea, but there seemed to be zero problems - people pottering in and out, men holding the door for the women etc. all very civilised.

I don’t think you get it.
Not talking about the single person loos you sometimes find, but large toilets with a black curtain covering the urinals and a few cubicle loos.Women have to walk past the curtain and find wet floors and toilet seats and dirty loos. It’s not onangry
Glad they realised their mistake tho as Galaxy says.Guess it won’t happen again.

I must admit I've never come across one like that. Are they commonplace?

In this case it was though, he handled that very well.

MrsThatcher Tue 10-Oct-23 14:55:33

It is shocking that these protesters can just walk up to the stage unchallenged- he could have had a knife. I thought Starmer looked terrified. How in earth do these nutters get in.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Oct-23 15:03:47

growstuff yes, particularly where they are either new or being replaced.

So to try to describe it. A long concrete widish building with doors that open directly into the street. Inside there is a mini-bathroom so loo sink etc. quite big.

Galaxy Tue 10-Oct-23 15:05:24

Dont know growstuff. I was at a pub the other week with unisex toilets which had signs up warning men not to flash others. Sigh.
Away from loos my patience is very thin at the moment, the utter self indulgence of that protestor. But yes I thought Starmer handled it well.

Oreo Tue 10-Oct-23 15:07:38

Of course, there are loads of those kinds of unisex loos for one person to go in and use.The ones at Conference were nothing like that!

Oreo Tue 10-Oct-23 15:09:07

But where’s the security Galaxy ? It could have been acid that was thrown.

I’ve no idea what they were like at conference I wasn’t there.

I just said what they were like in a post above.

OK! Fair enough! I've never seen one like that.

GG13 I was talking about shops in a high street. A number of the units have already been converted over the years to residential units. I don't suppose my town has the only high street like that.

In any case, having foreign landlords siphons off wealth from the UK, whether they own residential or commercial units.

ronib Tue 10-Oct-23 15:44:57

The so called nutter who threw glitter over KS is a member of a group calling for proportional representation. One aim is to use civil disobedience to further its aims. I share his pain.
The defence of the realm is a very important area of government and the Labour Party doesn’t exactly inspire confidence if security at its own party conference is so poor…..

Galaxy Tue 10-Oct-23 15:53:12

Great. I am sure the protestors actions will have a dramatic impact on the most vulnerable in society. Except of course they wont as that requires hard work, resilience, etc etc as demonstrated by Starmer over years now.

The local authorities need to decide if they want to attract more businesses to the high street or convert to residential.

Definitely should have had much tighter security, but with heightened tensions at the moment I am surprised that they got so close to Sir Starmer.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Oct-23 16:00:16

I’m not convinced that we can expect to regenerate the type of town centres we once had. On-line shopping has killed it.

It happened to poor Theresa May as well - remember?

Galaxy Tue 10-Oct-23 16:06:20

I will say unfortunatrly I think it's almost impossible to completely prevent that sort of thing without very authoritarian restrictions on who can attend.

LizzieDrip Tue 10-Oct-23 16:08:06

I was surprised at the ‘lax’ security that enabled a protester to get onto the stage with KS today. As others have said, the protester could have had much more sinister aims than throwing glitter. That said, I thought KS dealt with the situation superbly. After the initial shock (and he did look shocked) he simply took off the now glittery jacket, rolled up his sleeves and got on with the job in hand. Well done to the next Prime Minister of the UK👏👏👏

Casdon Tue 10-Oct-23 16:14:06

I think Galaxy is right. I don’t think it’s been identified yet who the protester was, but it’s more than likely to have been a delegate, who would have been there legitimately. The only way to prevent these incidents, which happen all too frequently in party conferences regardless of party is to tighten up the security further.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 10-Oct-23 16:19:34

I suppose they could have a line of sinister looking blackshirts in front of the stage. Not good optics though.
