I should have thought Yemen has more than enough of it’s own problems without getting involved in this as well.

I wonder who’s behind it? The Houthis are predominantly Shia so maybe using what’s happened as an excuse to get involved with an attack on Israel rather than an act of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza who are mainly Sunni Muslims.

The Israel-Palestine conflict is also an attack on Saudi (Iran's sworn enemy). Israel and Saudi were about to sign an agreement before the Hamas attack, but that's been abandoned now.

Hilary Benn making good points on Question Time.

GG13, nothing warrants the atrocities committed by Hamas and unless I've missed something, no-one is suggesting that. I think many of us are struggling to understand how the situation has come to this when it looked as if the things were more settled. I think it's interesting that our PM said "And we also recognise that the Palestinian people are victims of Hamas too. And that is why I welcome your decision yesterday that you took to ensure that routes into Gaza will be opened for humanitarian aid to enter,” This was said whilst offering support to Israel but with the added proviso of staying within the law. This is the stance that was taken by Biden and other Heads of state and I feel this represents how many of us feel. It is beyond doubt that Palestinians have been treated appallingly, it is not anti semitic to say that and it does not, in any way, excuse the vile behaviour of Hamas. I am just stating well documented facts.

Which proves that the British government are acting well in my view.

It's another regime that cannot care about its people, especially the women and the poor children, with one of the worst humanitarian crises happening in that country.

‘Sir, We are a group of UK paediatricians who are compelled to speak out about the British government’s inadequate response to the catastrophe in Gaza. We deplore the terrorist actions of Hamas and call for the immediate release of all hostages. Right now there is a child health emergency in Gaza. A million children’s lives are imperilled by the actions of the Israeli government. International law forbids the collective punishment of a civilian population and also forbids the forced removal of civilians. Spurred on by uncritical support from western governments, Israel continues to commit these heinous war crimes.
The violent targeting of civilians by Hamas and Israel is destroying hope for the stable, peaceful, just and secure future that all children in the Middle East need in order to build their lives. Calling unequivocally for a ceasefire and for the upholding of international law is the minimum that can be expected of any government in this situation. For the sake of Israeli and Palestinian children, our political leaders must do better.

As almost all those names are Muslim names, it’s not really surprising.

I think the British government have acted well. The heinous war crimes are all on Hamas.

The Houthis in Yemen are proxies for Iran.

After the holocaust I can totally understand why Israel is so protective of its borders.

Palestinians serve in the Israeli army (approx 5,000 currently) Palestinians live and work in Israel.

I think your constant cries of apartheid state are meaningless sound bites, and not representative of modern Israel.

It isn't me crying Apartheid state it is Amnesty International.
If you read the report the treatment of Palestinians in Israel, is not the same as the treatment of Jewish Israelis. They have restrictions on development, live in overcrowded areas with inadequate services and lack of proper investment. They do not have equal rights.
Israel maintains its system of fragmentation and segregation through different legal regimes that ensure the denial of nationality and status to Palestinians, violate their right to family unification and return to their country and their homes, and severely restrict freedom of movement based on legal status. All are intended to control the Palestinian population and aim to preserve a Jewish Israeli majority in key areas across Israeland the OPT.
Whilst they are granted citizenship, Palestinian citizens of Israel are denied a nationality, establishing a legal differentiation from Jewish Israelis. They are also denied certain benefits because of a linked exemption from military service.
^Meanwhile, Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem are not Israeli citizens. Instead, they are granted fragile permanent residency status that allows them to reside and work in the city, and enjoy social benefitsprovided by the Israeli National Insurance Institute and the national health insurance. Under discriminatory legislation and policies, however, the Israeli authorities have revoked the status of thousands of Palestinians, including retroactively, if they cannot prove that Jerusalem is their “centre of life”. This has had devastating
consequences on their human rights. By contrast, Jewish Israeli settlers residing in East Jerusalem enjoy Israeli citizenship and are exempt from laws and measures enacted against Palestinian residents of EastJerusalem^
At the same time, Israel has controlled the population registry in the West Bank and Gaza since 1967 and imposed policies, restrictions and measures to control the demography of the territory. Palestinians in these territories remain without citizenship and are considered stateless, except for those who have obtained citizenship from a third country. The Israeli military issues them with identification cards that enable them to permanently live and work in the territory. Israel’s control of the population registry since 1967 has further facilitated the fragmentation of Palestinians and restricted their freedom of movement based on their legal status and residence

I say to the pediatricians the solution is for hostages to be released and Hamas give up their arms and leave Palestine.
The destruction could end tomorrow, but it won’t because they are holding the population hostage as human shields.

Exactly, no Country whoever, wherever can be held to ransom by any terrorist organisation.

You can’t fight Hamas with force because they are fanatics and unreasonable. You have to outwit them. And the reason they took the hostages was because they knew how Israel would respond and they knew how the conflict would spread beyond Israel and Palestine. And their plan has succeeded. How was bombing Gaza going to free the hostages?

foxie48 Thu 19-Oct-23 20:42:12

Sorry meant to say, second class citizens but far better off then being a Palestinian living in Gaza or the West Bank.

Not sure how independent the Jewish virtual library might be on the subject of Arabs living Israel.

It seems pretty factual to me, basically although they can vote and are represented they are a minority group without equal access to good schools, university, employment etc They don't have to do military service but if they don't they do not have access to the benefits of having done so, there is a very good reason to join up. However, read it for yourself and make your own mind up tbh my view is they are second class citizens.

The destruction wont end because the Israeli Government wont be satisfied until the Palestinian people are wiped out .There is 75 years of abuse and mistreatment thats clear to see. What makes anyone believe Israel would play fair with these poor people who have been herded like animals and spoken of in disgusting term. The UN needs to restore palestinisn land back to palestinians and ensure Israel follows the rules .Thats the only way there will be peace
It should never have been allowed to happen in the first place

Israeli Arabs who live and work in Israel )but not treated equally) are not the same as Palestinians who live in Gaza or the West Bank.

MayBee70 Thu 19-Oct-23 18:50:47

‘Sir, I have always seen the creation of the state of Israel as necessary for the safety of Jewish people — as Daniel Finkelstein said, “Where will we go?” (Oct 11) — and I have always abhorred the intransigence of Hamas. Nevertheless, I have visited Israel twice, and been appalled by the way in which illegal settlers are not only increasingly encroaching on Palestinian land, but actively trying to prevent legal access to those lands by blocking roads. There is also the pettiness of some Israeli border guards who deliberately hold up Palestinian students who have to cross the security barrier to get to Bethlehem University, causing them to miss classes and exams. While the hardliners on both sides seem to wish each other out of existence, one can only feel compassion for those who simply wish to live their lives in peace.’
