Another story MP arrested for alleged rape.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 27-Oct-23 14:19:35

Whatever the outcome of this accusation, it seems to me that a lot of MPs live very seedy lives and seem to be permanently in the gutter.

Certainly not people most would want to mix with socially.

MaizieD Fri 27-Oct-23 14:15:06

According to the Guardian this morning Blunt says that he had earlier made a complaint to the police about his current accuser attempting extortion.

Which muddies the water somewhat.

Sorry Annie I think we may be talking about different things...
I'm not sure about the relevance?

I was saying the "offence" was apparently last September (I assume not the one just gone).
I have read little about it so may be wrong of course.

Anniebach Fri 27-Oct-23 13:08:40

He said he was homosexual over 10 years ago

I thought this was only last September.
Perhaps I'm wrong.

Rape is not easily "brushed off" Katie59

Of course not but 10 yrs later you are not going to prove it in a criminal court. For Blunt its the reputational damage that will cost him unless there are a string of other incidents.

Galaxy Fri 27-Oct-23 10:06:27

Actually if you look at some of the most serious offenders they often have a history of flashing, and other offences, so it's not ideal for society to brush it off.
No annie his behaviour was around defending an mp found guilty of assaulting a 15 year old, hounding of women who disagree with, failure to declare interests etc.

These historic claims are very difficult to prove, unless there are multiple claims they are unlikely to result in a criminal conviction. A civil claim involving compensation is much easier to determine but then it’s the incentive of a wealthy man who can pay. There will be more cases because any wealthy public figure that had a relationship with a young junior makes himself vulnerable to a claim years later.

Working as a young nurse I was groped by patients many times, a couple of times by other staff, it was a hazard of the job, you brush it off, I’m sure it’s not as bad these days, 40 yrs ago it was bad!.

Anniebach Fri 27-Oct-23 09:33:49

Has he been accused of rape before this ?

Galaxy Fri 27-Oct-23 09:32:18

I am not judging him on this case in the slightest. I judge him on his previous unpleasant behaviour.

maddyone Fri 27-Oct-23 09:09:28

A member of my extended family was charged with rape. The accusation came from his very vindictive ex wife. He was suspended from his job as a result (police). We all believed him to be innocent as he claimed because we were well aware of his ex wife’s behaviour. It took over a year for it to come to trial. A year of hell for him. He was found to be innocent.

Do not be so quick to judge until you know the facts.

welbeck

you do not fear the law ?

I fear the law but not in the way you infer.
It’s very scary when you’re arrested for something you know damn well you haven’t done.

That was shocking, I kept thinking about the poor baby crying in the car, too!

Fear the law?

I'm not sure what that means.
Fear the laws of the land?
Fear law enforcers?

The law should apply equally to everyone and a person has the right to be presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Galaxy Thu 26-Oct-23 20:42:03

Oh I am not worried. smile

I wouldn’t worry Galaxy. I’m not sure what welbeck meant by her comment exactly, but as Crispin Blunt himself outlined the charges not the police, and as the incident regarding his defence of the other MP is already in the public domain, you’re in the clear I’m sure.

Galaxy Thu 26-Oct-23 19:33:02

I fear the enforcers of the law quite a bit to be fair. The Met for example have been behaving in an appalling way for a considerable length of time.
If you think I have broken any law in my post please report me.

It does seem rather endless at the moment.

Best to keep in mind that according to the laws of the U.K. you are innocent until proven guilty.

Quite, gg.

welbeck Thu 26-Oct-23 18:58:19

you do not fear the law ?

Galaxy Thu 26-Oct-23 18:51:03

Well in fairness Crispin Blunt had no compunction about defending a MP found guilty of assaulting a 15 year old boy so I could say I will behave with the same respect towards him and the law as he did to others.

The police wouldn’t name anyone before they had (with the approval of the CPS) been charged.

Yes that’s right

People are named, because the police have found that it frequently encourages others who may have been hurt by the named person.

In fairness he wasn’t named by the police though, he named himself if you read the article. I think there is more to this than meets the eye, although goodness knows what exactly.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 26-Oct-23 18:32:34

Well I hope if he is innocent it gets rapidly dealt with.
