The U.N. has a better reputation than the Islamist terror groups in Africa

Of course they should be better than a terrorist group!

But they are far from perfect and peacekeeping is their job.
They should not be abusing women and children in exchange for aid; even if only a minority behave badly, it tarnishes the reputation of all.

Did anyone watch the Israeli Ambassador to the UN delivering his speech today?
Such dignity even in anger as he detailed the terrible actions of hamas as the peace music festival, at the kibbutzim and houses and what the army and medics found.A lot of it filmed on phones and bodycams taken from dead or prisoner hamas terrorists and on home security cameras.
I listened to him with tears pouring down my face thinking of the last moments of those poor men women and children.It was something from your worst nightmares.
It was powerful stuff and the UN and the world needed to hear it.

As an American said on TV to an Israeli spokesperson. "You are able to travel here from Tel Aviv to make your point. No one from Gaza can do so."
There will be little or no film of what is happening in Gaza because there is little or no power to allow any filming. And no one is allowed out to say what they have witnessed.

Yes, of course it does. But is the UN effective? It makes lots of pronouncements which all sides of the war appear to ignore. But what does it actually do? What can it do?

It was the same at the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and that it still going on.

All these powers just carry on doing what they are set on doing regardless of what the UN says.

According to Human Rights Watch they didn’t cover themselves in glory.

I am not a Christian, but I do think Brown’s Christianity shines through.

America has put out a statement saying that it launched missiles into Syria overnight and took out two missile launching sites of the Iran Revolutionary Guard.

This could be far more serious than anything happening in Israel/Gaza.

I wondered if the UN peacekeeping forces might have a role here?
I wondered that, too, Aveline - if not, just what are they for?

I am not an expert, AC has been seconded on UN peace keeping duties in the past.

This is a war, what could they do, detain IDF personnel before they launch missiles, as for being deployed in Gaza?

Surely the UN could broker a ceasefire, negotiate and supervise the release of hostages then peacekeepers could take over?

One of their roles, supposedly, is to maintain peace and security.

If they cannot do that in so many places where there is conflict, what is their point?

I would have thought that they can’t do anything unless invited by the sovereign country, agreements drawn up etc.

I found this. Surely they must have a role here? Israel simply can't go on blasting those Palestinian refugees in their own country and Hamas must stop firing back. Then there's the hostages...

Just watching the news. It's all so awful. Atrocities on both sides and both defying the UN. I wondered if the UN peacekeeping forces might have a role here? Just stopping both sides until some sort of peace could be negotiated?

SKY is reporting that Qatari Officials have put out a statement saying that the hostages will be freed if all fighting stops.

Let’s hope Israel is compliant and Hamas keep their word.

And so we were discussing if the terrorists on 7/10 were given drugs to enable them to commit those atrocities, and I was about to say that they surely must have been given some sort of chemical anaesthetic because it would have been impossible to do the things they did without some sort of anaesthesia.
