Starmer’s Dilemma Over Palestinian Situation

(498 Posts)

This piece comes from the Conservative Party newsletter and is very even handed about Sir Keir’s awkward position. To be fair he has stared down the position of his Muslim MPs and Councillors so is taking a real decision.

Please acknowledge that this article sounds fairly sympathetic towards him.

So what do Grans think?

Ilovecheese Fri 03-Nov-23 14:24:49

We really should not be demonising Palestinians or Muslims , they are not our enemies, just ordinary people the same as we are.
Marching for peace in no way disrespects our war dead. I expect many of our own fathers took part in world war two, we do not disrepectvour own fathers by showing some compassion for the people in Gaza.
We do not have to take sides.

ronib Starmer’s position is unchanged from what he said in his last speech the other day. How is that gesture politics, do explain?

ronib Fri 03-Nov-23 14:13:16

Latest on KS - calling for a humanitarian pause in Gaza. Will this be heeded by the main players?
Gesture politics to pacify the Labour Party?

Glorianny local government is concerned with local matters. It is not the prerogative of ordinary Uk voters to demand of another country how that country responds to a severe attack.
If I lived in Pendle, I would recognise the limitations of my personal wishes over another country’s internal security and warfare. I would form an opinion on the morality of the war and recognise that at the end of the day, maybe I would prefer a different approach but it has to be resolved by the main players involved. Don’t blame the leader of the opposition.

Starmer is running scared. He saw what happened to Corbyn when he questioned Zionists.

I have no respect for him any more.

The Muslim lobby, they are the scary ones. I fear for my family living in London. What a hot bed of Muslim hatred it has become. Can't even commerate our war dead, many of which where of the Muslim faith, without them demonstrating. As for Mand s S the cowardly way they withdrew our Christmas colours because of some stupid analogy. This country has gone to the dogs.

Glorianny Labour councillors do not set Labour Party policy? KS is Labour’s best chance of winning the next election.
And the most obvious point is that the Israelis are not going to listen to KS if he jumps ship to please local councillors!

If you lived in those areas and you had voted for those councillors, and you were a Labour member who believed in a ceasefire would you still think they should resign? Or would you think they were right and Starmer should go?

People vote for councillors because of their local influence and input, and very frequently the leadership of a council is by a different political group to the government of the day. It’s not the case that people would endorse the tack taken by local councillors regarding issues for which they hadn’t elected them in the first place.

Why are the Burnley & Pendle council leaders not resigning from the Labour Party?

Haven't Labour lost enough councillors already?

Thank you for the link on 1/11 at 13.43.
I don’t blame a single Jew or Israeli for feeling this way.
It’s how I would feel if what happened in Israel on 7/10 had happened to me and my community. I would feel exactly the same.

In my experience, when someone feels the need to point out that the forthcoming text is important and HUGE, it suggests a lack of strength in the message of said text. As Shakespeare says: ‘The lady doth protest too much, methinks.’

Callistemon21 Fri 03-Nov-23 10:42:57

👇
I had to look up the meaning:

"This emoji often emphasizes that the text under it is important. If someone sends a 👇 to you and it shows that they're still typing, be patient! There's likely something interesting or eye-opening coming your way"

What a disappointment that was, I was expecting something really interesting.

Grany I’ve asked this question previously on this thread but received no answer. So, I respectfully ask again, how do those calling for a ceasefire propose it will work? Keir Starmer has, very clearly, set out reasons why a humanitarian pause is preferable to a complete ceasefire. I would really like to hear the argument as to why a ceasefire is preferable and how it would work. Thank you, in anticipation!

Galaxy Fri 03-Nov-23 09:50:15

He must be terrified.

I have a view about the UN a once respected group, no longer!
Nothing to do with what they do or don’t say about Israel tho.

Dinahmo as from tomorrow Iran is Chair of the Human Rights Commission part of the UN.

Do you really think they will be able to do anything worthwhile?

I only found this out when reading the other thread. So no, I don't they will be able to. In my worst moments I can see us heading for another World War.

I've just watched Phil Moorhouse's video and think he is probably right.

There is no way in which Hamas can defeat Israel. What they did on 7 October was deplorable and outrageous and they should be called to account for it, if at all possible. I doubt that will happen because Israel will kill them all, even if they have to flatten the whole of Gaza in the process.

So what is to happen? The UN need to ensure that other countries in the Middle East do not get involved in order to prevent this conflict from spreading. The UN and America in particular need to hold Israel to account for the illegal occupation of the Palestinian lands. I watched a news item within the last week of young Israeli men who lived in an area in a mountainous desert region, only recently occupied, with encouragement from Netanyahu. They were brandishing an array of weapons and hoped that they would be able to use them.

And then there is the problem of the refugees.
