Johnson goes to Israel!

After his visit to Ukraine at the start of the war proved beneficial, Boris Johnson's current trip to Israel smells of desperation. Having been slammed by the recent Covid witnesses as chaotic, fickle, weak and incompetent, first he tried putting out a written defence. Now he’s gone off to Israel claiming to show support for the Netanyahu government. Why? It’s not his role. He can add nothing. Who is paying - flight, security etc? Of course, its us the tax payers. As Netanyahu's future looks less secure, this can’t be seen as anything other than a weak man seeking any route to divert attention from his own current humiliation.

You say Johnsons visit to Isreal will accomplish nothing and that it isn't his role, do you mean like it is not Blairs role to talk to Starmer?

How have you drawn that parallel Eejit? Ex PM goes to a foreign country with no official remit to offer his advice, versus ex PM is asked to advise new leader of his party on becoming PM. Spot the difference?

At least he is consistent. Meddling and self important despite everything. Yes, take his passport away to avoid more of the same.

Just when I thought things couldn't get worse!!

I find this gossipy speculative and very subjective discussion inappropriate and offensive,

Lovetopaint037 Mon 06-Nov-23 13:55:02

Anything to burnish his image. Churchill to the rescue. Heaven help the poor Middle East. Perhaps The Telegraph is paying for it.

What good do these foreign politicians hope to do by visiting war zones. It smacks of 'rubber necking' by people in cars passing a road traffic accident.
They must waste time and money for the countries having to accommodate them.

Maybe he has gone to block a Hamas tunnel, he likes to be in the limelight he won't be able to resist if they show him one.
Just picture him stuck half out with his fluffy duckling hair spouting something Churchilian. Maybe Carrie has suggested it as a good holiday spot for him and a bit of peace for her. He certainly won't be helping bring about peace.

Ah, feted for his diplomacy skills, now. Of course he covered himself with glory as Foreign Secretary, didn’t he? Tell that to Nazanin Zachariah Ratcliffe.

President Zelensky seems to have dumped Boris, so he needs somewhere else to play ‘World Statesman’.

Incidentally, whilst no supporter of Hamas nor war, nor am I anti Israel, we would do well to remember that we, the UK, partially caused this situation in the first place by our meddling then backing off and handing it to the UN. Every nation has the right to defend itself, I’d suggest Israel are going far far further than simply defending themselves and that Palenstinians also have the right to live peacefully somewhere.

nellenoxin Mon 06-Nov-23 12:29:25

He hasn't been any use in the UK so what is he going to contribute to help there ! Self serving politicians just make me so cross !

Cossy Mon 06-Nov-23 12:25:06

Really ?? Perhaps he should stay here and do a his lovely new jobs and look after his many children. He’s no longer a politician and should keep his blundering beak out, we all saw how much help he was to that poor woman arrested and imprisoned in Iraq (or was it Iran?) Can only assume the person who on here who stated he helped bring “peace” in Ireland and Yugoslavia was joshing ?? There is still no real peace in either of these regions !

As an ex PM he will be in receipt of round the clock security.

My thoughts exactly! We, the taxpayers will be paying for this publicity stunt.
I don't trust Johnson to do anything that isn't to his own benefit

Grandma2002 Mon 06-Nov-23 12:06:28

Yes, just looked it up it is GB News.

Grandma2002 Mon 06-Nov-23 12:04:54

Hasn't Boris got new employers. Is it GB News? Perhaps they are paying and sending accompanying camera-men

leeds22 Mon 06-Nov-23 11:57:50

It is probably sending out a (wrong) impression to the world that the UK is supporting Netanyahu. Should stay at home and keep his head down in shame for his time as PM and Foreign Secretary.

I saw a little clip of him speaking this morning (but it was probably filmed yesterday, surely he’s not still there?) Anyway he hasn’t said anything that most of us don’t already know from what I saw, reiterated the horrendousnesss of the Hamas attack, Israel must defend itself etc. It was an extremely small clip, he may have said other things.
I abhor the violence being reaped upon the Palestinian people, but I do feel that Sunak and Starmer are right to support the right of the Israeli people. The addition of other views by other politicians or celebrities isn’t particularly helpful in my opinion.

ronib Mon 06-Nov-23 09:36:31

BJ might be useful but not in the conventional sense. If BJ takes the view that Israel is allowed to defend itself against Hamas then that makes sense. If BJ and Israel think that Hamas needs to be removed and completely obliterated then that’s a difficult position to achieve. Hamas can operate from a number of different countries and its potential removal from Gaza doesn’t mean that it is less of a threat.
Best wait and see what BJ has to say….

Perhaps/definitely I am the only one here who thinks that Boris is lending support to the people of Israel. If it helps in any way then I am all for it. 👍

I have said upthread that if he brings peace, then that is great.

I wouldnt care if Coco the Clown went, as long as peace comes.

* The issue the majority is struggling with is when does defence stop and genocide begin.*

That is what I am beginning to think.

My impression is that Johnson takes the position of unquestioning support for Israel’s right to defend itself. It’s hard to argue against that. The issue the majority is struggling with is when does defence stop and genocide begin.

I don’t see Blair simplistically as a war monger, despite my total opposition to the invasion of Iraq. I left the LP in protest, much good that achieved. Blair’s legacy is more mixed than simply rejecting everything he did and does because of Iraq. Stressing here- it was wrong on every level.

You have summed exactly how I feel too Iam64 - on both counts.

Horrible, horrible warmonger. Where he goes, trouble follows and why he is still prancing around on the world stage I can’t imagine.
