Johnson goes to Israel!

After his visit to Ukraine at the start of the war proved beneficial, Boris Johnson's current trip to Israel smells of desperation. Having been slammed by the recent Covid witnesses as chaotic, fickle, weak and incompetent, first he tried putting out a written defence. Now he’s gone off to Israel claiming to show support for the Netanyahu government. Why? It’s not his role. He can add nothing. Who is paying - flight, security etc? Of course, its us the tax payers. As Netanyahu's future looks less secure, this can’t be seen as anything other than a weak man seeking any route to divert attention from his own current humiliation.

Kalu

Someone please remove his passport!
Nothing this buffoon does within the UK or abroad ends well.

I think more than his passport needs removing!!

^The West is no match for his political ambitions^

Are you saying wwe should let him run amok through Europe?

I have friends who were refugees when they were children from Eastern European countries and I don't think they would agree with you.

Callistemon21 Putin can sustain a long term war against Ukraine and Ukraine doesn’t have the resources either manpower or money to fight a long war.
It is a pity that one Boris Johnson could not see the bigger picture at the outset.

With the quality of political classes running Europe set against Putin, I can only hope that Putin will be satisfied with recouping parts of Ukraine possibly by 2024/25.

Perhaps he's angling for being made a Special Envoy for the UN or some other sinecure.

Interesting that our ex Prime Minister, Scomo, is also visiting Israel. Maybe there is some sort of meeting of exes going on ? Scomo is an avowed evangelical Christian - can’t see him being accepted by either side. Apart from the lack of intelligence visible when he was PM.

I was puzzled too, nanna8

^In the case of Ukraine, I would cut my losses and try to negotiate some kind of peace deal which offers some compromise but is not a total surrender^.

This is Putin you're talking about!!

Callistemon21 yes Putin the consummate politician - he knows what he wants and how to achieve it.
The West is no match for his political ambitions.
Putin has the capacity to sit this through - Ukraine doesn’t. Pity.

^Oreo and Callistemon21 Russia has no need of our support, morally or militarily^

🤔 what on earth does that mean?

Callistemon21 In reply to Oreo asking if I would have the Uk support Russia. To emphasise Russia would not seek our support.

As BJ has now joined GB News, perhaps he is going to Israel as their envoy.
Incidentally, nobody seems to remember that Blair, despite his other failures, sent in our forces to bring peace to Sierra Leone where there was a terrible civil war in which all too many (children included) suffered amputations of limbs by one side or the other.

ronib Sun 05-Nov-23 18:50:26

Oreo and Callistemon21 Russia has no need of our support, morally or militarily. I don’t think Ukraine has enough young men to support a long drawn out conflict with a super power. In the case of Ukraine, I would cut my losses and try to negotiate some kind of peace deal which offers some compromise but is not a total surrender. If possible….. the alternative is to lose your population over time and be even weaker.
Pragmatism is my preferred strategy.

Surely, he can only be going as a journalist looking for a scoop. He has no authority to represent the UK in any other capacity.

I couldn’t believe the encouragement BJ gave to the Ukrainian government to fight a war with no winners against Russia. Still no resolution in sight there. How many deaths?

Would you have the UK support Russia? Or give no support to Ukraine even though the rest of Europe, just about, and the US are doing their best to help Ukraine defend itself against an aggressor like the foul Putin?

Perhaps you're too young to remember the Soviet Union, ronib, the struggles for freedom and the jubilation as one country after another regained their independence.

Oreo Sun 05-Nov-23 18:16:13

I was surprised to see Boris has gone to Israel, wouldn’t have thought there was much if anything he could say that our government hasn’t already said.On the other hand, if the ex Australian PM has also gone there I guess Israel is pleased to have as many friends as possible.

Surely he's just a freelance journalist these days. He represents nobody but himself.

No change there then! grin

All things to all people in my opinion. It's a photo op just like Ukraine. Maybe they'll name a street in a kibbutz after him. Worst PM I can recall since WW2.

ronib Sun 05-Nov-23 14:44:26

But there’s no end in sight for Ukraine? Russia is so much better equipped to fight a long war. Russia will win and a negotiation is long overdue imo.
BJ was very influential at the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis and it was the wrong course of action to encourage.

I think in thst instance he was right.
Poor Ukraine is fighting for all of Europe.

I agree that he was right to show such support for Ukraine.

I worry that Ukraine has disappeared from the news here while we have constant coverage of the Middle East conflagration.

They are both dreadful situations. I just don't see quite what BJ will offer in Israel/Gaza given he is now seen as an untrustworthy buffoon.
